Now. . .let’s getoperating!TURNING THE TRANSCEIVER ON AND OFF To turn the transceiver on, press and hold in the POWERswitch for one second. To turn the transceiver off, again press and hold in thePOWER switch for one second.O PERATIONWhen you are operating the FT-897 with theoptional FP-30 External power supply, alwaysturn on the MAIN switch on the FP-30 beforeturning on the POWER switch on the FT-897. When shut-ting down, please turn off the POWER switch on the FT-897 before turning off the MAIN switch on the FP-30.OPERATING B AND SELECTIONThis transceiver covers an incredibly wide frequency range,over which a number of different operating modes are used.Therefore, this transceiver’s frequency coverage has beendivided into different operating bands, each of with has itsown pre-set frequency steps and operating modes. You canchange the channel steps and operating mode once you getstarted, of course, per the next section.To change the frequency band, press either theBAND(DWN) or BAND(UP) key to move to the next loweror higher operating band, respectively.VFOa and VFOb are independent VFOs, sothey may be set to different bands. See the“Stacked VFO System” discussion on page 22for details.1. Press and hold in the [F] key for one second to enterthe Menu mode.2. Rotate the MEM/VFO CH knob to recall the MenuItem to be changed (for example, Menu Mode No-001[EXT MENU], which Enables or Disables the “ExtendedMenu” Mode).3. Rotate the DIAL knob to set this feature (in this ex-ample, the default setting is “OFF (Disabled),” so ro-tate the DIAL knob to set this feature to “ON” (En-abled).4.
