Insert your key’s (three-conductor) plug into the rear-panel KEY jack.6. You can adjust the CW sidetone volume level via MenuMode No-029 [CW SIDE TONE]. To adjust the CWsidetone volume level:• While still in Multi Function Row “j” [SPOT, BK,KYR], press and hold in the [B](BK) key for one sec-ond. This is a “hot key” feature which will instantlyrecall Menu Mode No-029 [CW SIDE TONE]• Rotate the DIAL to select a new level; on the arbi-trary scale of “0” ~ “100,” the default value is “50.”• When done, press and hold in the [F] key for onesecond to save the new setting and exit to normaloperation.7. You also can adjust the CW sidetone pitch using MenuMode No-027 [CW PITCH]. This adjustment also con-trols the BFO offset (actual pitch of your transmittedsignal relative to your current receive frequency). To ad-just the CW sidetone pitch:• Press and hold in the [F] key for one second to enterthe Menu mode.• Rotate the MEM/VFO CH knob to Menu Mode No-027 [CW PITCH].• Rotate the DIAL to select a new pitch tone/BFO off-set. The available offset range is 400 ~ 800 Hz (de-fault value is “700 Hz”).• When done, press and hold in the [F] key for onesecond to save the new setting and exit to normaloperation.8. The FT-897 also has a “CW SPOT” feature, utilizingthe sidetone. Because the sidetone is a representation ofthe actual pitch of your transmitted signal, it may be usedfor zeroing in on another station. To activate the CWSPOT tone, just press and hold in the [HOME] key forone second while in the CW mode.Pressing the [A](SPOT) key while in MultiFunction Row “j” [SPOT, BK, KYR] will alsoactivate the CW SPOT tone.KEY GNDGNDKEYCOMMONCOMMONDOTDOTDASHDASH2. Press the MODE() or MODE() key, as needed, toselect one of the CW modes (CW/CWR).The “CW” mode utilizes USB-side carrier injection,while the CWR (Reverse) mode utilizes LSB-side in-jection.3. When you close the key (or activate your computer-gen-erated keying interface by whatever means), the trans-mitter will automatically be engaged. When you havefinished sending, the receiver will return, after a briefdelay (see next section).4. The CW hang time can be adjusted using the Menu Mode.To adjust the CW hang time:• Press and hold in the [F] key for one second to enterthe Menu mode.• Rotate the MEM/VFO CH knob to Menu Mode No-024 [CW DELAY].• Rotate the DIAL to select a longer or shorter delaytime (default: 250 ms). If the delay selection is set to“FULL,” the transceiver will operate in the full break-in mode (allowing you to hear between the charac-ters that are being sent).• When you have set the desired delay, press and holdin the [F] key for one second to save the new settingand exit to normal operation.5. To practice your CW sending (without transmitting),press the [B](BK) key to make the “Parentheses” disap-pear. Now, pressing the key will cause the CW sidetoneto be heard, but your radio will not be transmitting asignal on the air.
