3 EnBefore you connect the speakers, place each speaker inits respective location. Speaker positioning is veryimportant as it affects the overall sound quality of thesystem. Place the speakers in locations that willoptimize the sound quality at your listening position.Refer to the illustration. The position of the subwoofer is not as critical as theposition of the other speakers because sub-basssounds are not very directional. Refer to “Installing thesubwoofer” for more information.NotePlacing the speakers too close to a CRT-type TV mayimpair the picture color or cause a buzzing noise. Inthis case, move the speakers at least 20 cm (8") awayfrom the TV. This is not an issue with LCD and plasmaTVs.Installing the front, center, and surround speakersFront speakers (NS-F40): Place the two frontspeakers on the left and right sides of the TV facingdirectly forward.Center speaker (NS-C40): Place the center speakercentrally between the front speakers, facing directlyforward.Surround speakers (NS-B40): Place the left andright surround speakers behind your listeningposition, facing slightly inward. The center and surround speakers can be placed on aflat surface or wall- mounted.See “Wall-mounting the speakers” for moreinformation.Installing the subwooferPlace the subwoofer on the outside of either the rightor the left front speaker, as shown in A and B.The placement shown in C is also possible, however, ifthe subwoofer is placed directly facing a wall and yourlistening position is in the center of the room, you maynot be able to obtain enough bass sound from thesubwoofer. This is because “standing waves” areforming between the two parallel walls and cancellingout the bass sounds. In this case, position thesubwoofer at an angle to the wall. It may be necessaryto break up parallel wall surfaces by placingbookshelves, etc., along them.Wall-mounting the speakersYou can mount the speakers on the wall as follows.1 Install screws (commercially available) into asolid wall or wall support as shown in theillustration. Use 3.5 to 4 mm (1/8") diameterself-tapping screws.2 Hang each speaker by its keyhole slots ontothe protruding screws.NoteMake sure the shaft of the screw is seated in thenarrow part of the keyhole slot. Otherwise, the speakermay fall.Installing the speakersCenterFront rightSubwooferSurroundleftFront leftSurroundrightSubwoofer Front speakerA BCNote: Standing wavesmay make it difficult tohear bass sounds here.
