VLAN membership can be configured through softwareinstead of physically relocating devices or connections. Grouping devices with acommon set of requirements regardless of their physical location can greatly simplifynetwork design. VLANs can address issues such as scalability, security, and networkmanagement. The purpose of VLAN configurations on the IP phone is to insert tag with VLANinformation to the packets generated by the IP phone. When VLAN is properlyconfigured for the ports (internet port and PC port) on the IP phone, the IP phone will tagall packets from these ports with the VLAN ID. The switch receives and forwards thetagged packets to the corresponding VLAN according to the VLAN ID in the tag asdescribed in IEEE Std 802.3.The VLAN feature on the IP phones allows simultaneous access for a regular PC. Thisfeature allows a PC to be daisy chained to an IP phone and the connection for both PCand IP phone to be trunked through the same physical Ethernet cable. The IP phones support automatic discovery of the VLAN via LLDP or DHCP. The VLANinformation can be also manually configured on the IP phones. The assignment takesplace in this order: assignment via LLDP, manual configuration, and then assignment viaDHCP.VoIPon www.voipon.co.uk sales@voipon.co.uk Tel: +44 (0)1245 808195 Fax: +44 (0)1245 808299
