The automaticdistribution of network parameters to hosts eases the administrative burden ofmaintaining IP networks. The IP phones comply with the DHCP specificationsdocumented in RFC 2131. If using DHCP, the IP phones connected to the networkbecome operational without having to be manually assigned IP addresses andadditional network parameters. By default, DHCP is enabled on the IP phones.DHCP OptionDHCP provides a framework for passing network information to devices on a TCP/IPnetwork. Network and other control information are carried in tagged data items thatare stored in the options field of the DHCP message. The data items themselves are alsocalled options. When the IP phones are simply plugged into the network, the DHCP process begins. TheIP phones broadcast DISCOVER messages to request the network information carried inDHCP options and the DHCP server responds with the specific values in thecorresponding options. The following table lists the common DHCP options supported by the IP phones.Parameter DHCP Option DescriptionSubnet Mask 1 Specify the client’s subnet mask.Time Offset 2Specify the offset of the client's subnet inseconds from Coordinated Universal Time(UTC).VoIPon www.voipon.co.uk sales@voipon.co.uk Tel: +44 (0)1245 808195 Fax: +44 (0)1245 808299
