Revised 2019-08-22 Hardware InstallationDrawing No. LP0988 Grounding the Switch2-44 N-Tron ® Series 700/7000 Managed Industrial Ethernet Switch Hardware Manual - Volume I2.5.1 Grounding 708TX, 708FX2, 716TX, 716FX2, 7018TX and 7018FX2 ModelsBoth V- legs of the power input connector are connected tochassis internally on the PCB. Connecting a drain wire toearth ground from one of the V- terminal plugs as shown herewill ground the switch and the chassis. The power leads fromthe power source should be limited to 3 meters or less inlength. As an alternate, users can run a drain wire & lug from any of the Din-Rail screws or empty PEM nuts on the enclosure. When using anunused PEM nut to connect a ground lug via a machine screw, careshould be taken to limit the penetration of the outer skin by less than1/4 in (NOTE: Recommend #6 32X1/4" Phillips pan head zincscrew). Failure to do so may cause irreversible damage to theinternal components of the switch.Note: Before applying power to the grounded switch, youshould use a volt meter to verify there is no voltagedifference between the power supply’s negative outputterminal and the switch chassis grounding point.Remarque: Avant de mettre sous tension le commutateur de mise à la terre, vous utilisez unvoltmètre pour vérifier qu'il n'y a pas de différence de tension entre l'alimentation de la borne desortie négative et le commutateur de point de mise à la masse du châssis. If the use of shielded cables is required, it is generally recommended to only connect the shield at one end toprevent ground loops and interfere with low level signals (i.e. thermocouples, RTD, etc.). CAT5e cablesmanufactured to EIA-568A or 568B specifications are required for use with Red Lion Switches. In the event all CAT5e patch cable distances are small (i.e. All Ethernet devices are located in the same localcabinet and/or referenced to the same earth ground), it is permissible to use fully shielded cables terminated tochassis ground at both ends in systems void of low level analog signals.2.5.2 Grounding 708M12 and 716M12 ModelsConnect a drain wire with lug from the 708M12 or 716M12 switchchassis to a known ground from the switch ground screw as shownhere. The power leads from the power source should be limited to 3meters or less in length. Recommend using a Phillips pan head zincscrew.Note: Before applying power to the grounded switch, you should use a volt meter to verify there isno voltage difference between the power supply’s negative output terminal and the switch chassisgrounding point.
