196 CHAPTER 11: T ROUBLESHOOTINGConnecting aComputer to aConsole PortYou can connect a computer directly to the serial Console port on an NBXNetwork Call Processor, an analog terminal adapter, digital and analogline cards, and the 3Com Attendant Console, and then use CLIcommands and view system status messages through a terminalemulation program. Typically, direct access to the device is fortroubleshooting purposes and should be done only under the direction ofa support technician. However, the serial port provides easy access forconfiguring IP settings using the nbxIpConfig command. Commands arecase sensitive. You can connect a computer directly to these NBX devices:To connect to the serial port on a 3Com 3105 Attendant Console, youmust use a DB9 (female)-to-RJ-45 adapter. It does not matter which computer operating system you use. As long asthe computer has a terminal emulation program that can emulate aVT100 terminal (for example, Microsoft Hyperterminal), it cancommunicate with any of the cards listed in Table 37.To connect the computer to the COM1 or CONSOLE port:1 Using a standard computer serial cable (9-pin male to 9-pin female),connect the male end of the cable to the female connector (COM1 orCONSOLE) on the front panel of the board.2 Connect the female end of the cable to an available serial port on thecomputer.3 Start the terminal emulation software and create a new connection.Table 37 Serial Port ConnectionsCard PortNBX NCP CONSOLEor COM1BRI-ST Digital Line Card CONSOLEE1 Digital Line Card CONSOLET1 Digital Line Card CONSOLENBX Analog Line Card (3C10114C only) CONSOLENBX Analog Terminal Card (3C10117C only) CONSOLENBX Analog Terminal Adapter (3C10400 only) 101013Com 3105 Attendant Console Serial
