232 APPENDIX C: G UIDELINES FOR CONNECTING REMOTE AUDIO DEVICESInstalling FaxMachines with ATAsWhen installing a fax machine with a single-port Analog TerminalAdapter, consider the following points:■ A fax machine requires twice the bandwidth (160 Kbps) of a voicedevice.■ A fax machine must be configured to use Mulaw compression.■ Problems encountered receiving or sending faxes could indicatenetwork traffic issues.■ Some PC faxes or modems may not work properly due to the very lowlatency requirements of such devices.■ The most effective way to install a fax machine is to install it using anATA connected to an uplink card or hub card in the NBX system, or touse a dedicated switch port for the ATA connected to the fax machine.■ Configuring an ATA port for fax operation optimizes the performancefor inbound and outbound faxes. If you make a voice call using theATA device (for example, if you use the telephone portion of the faxmachine), the quality of the audio may be affected. If you make a VTLcall using the ATA device, the audio may be unusable.
