21TailstockIf the handle will not lock the tailstock, follow theprocedure bellow:1. Lower the handle to the unlocked position.2. Slide the tailstock to an area that allows accessto the underside of the tailstock.3. Tighten tailstock clamping bolt (underside oftailstock) 1/4 turn. Test for proper locking. Repeat asnecessary.Tailstock Off-SetFollow the procedure below to off-set the tailstock tocut shallow tapers:1. Lock tailstock in position by raising lockinghandle (A, Fig.23).2. Alternately loosen and tighten two hex socketcap screws (B, Fig.23).Tailstock GibsTake up play in the tailstock by tightening two gibscrews (C, Fig.23) on either side of the tailstock base.Note: Do not over tighten. Excessive tightening willlead to premature wear of the gibs and mating parts.Headstock AlignmentThe headstock has been aligned at the factory andshould not require adjustment. However, ifadjustment is deemed necessary, follow the procedurebelow to align the headstock:1. Using a machinist’s precision level on the badways, make sure the lathe is level side-to-side andfront to back. If the lathe is not level, correct to a levelcondition before proceeding. Re-set alignment if anyleveling adjustments were made.2. From steel bar stock of approximately twoinches in diameter, cut a piece approximately eightinches long.3. Place two inches of bar stock into chuck andtighten chuck. Do not use the tailstock or center tosupport the other end.Fig.23
