7-17Managing SparesIn This ChapterUnderstanding How Spares and Failover WorkStorage Manager Pro allows you to assign spare disk drives eitherto a specific array or to a spare pool. If the controller detects anunrecoverable error during I/O, it checks for an available sparedrive that has sufficient free space to handle the failover. Failover isthe process by which the controller rebuilds data on a spare drivewhen a drive that is part of an array fails.Note: Spares only work with redundant array types: mirrorset (RAID 1), RAID 3 set, RAID 4, set RAID 5 set, stripe setof mirror sets (RAID 0/1), or stripe set of RAID 5 sets(RAID 0/5).The free space on the spare must be contiguous and must be equalto or larger than the used space (space allocated to an array) for onearray on the failed disk drive.Understanding How Spares and Failover Work 7-1Managing Spares Assigned to an Array 7-2Managing the Spare Pool 7-4Enabling Dynamic Spares 7-6Viewing Spare Assignments and Status 7-7Spare Management Guidelines 7-8
