Section 2 -- OperationCarrier Air-cooled 7 kW, 12 kW and 15 kW GeneratorsOPERATION2.5 MANUAL TRANSFER OPERATION2.5.1 TRANSFER TO GENERATORPOWER SOURCETo start the generator and activate the transfer switchmanually, proceed as follows:1. Set the generator's AUTO/OFF/MANUAL switchto OFF.2. Set the generator's main circuit breaker to its OFF (oropen) position.3. Turn OFF the utility power supply to the transferswitch using the means provided (such as autility main line circuit breaker)._Do not attempt to activate the transfer switchmanually until all power voltage supplies tothe switch have been positively turned off.Failure to turn off all power voltage suppliesmay result in extremely hazardous and possiblyfatal electrical shock.4. Use the manual transfer handle inside the transferswitch to move the main contacts to their "Standby"position, i.e., loads connected to the standby powersource (Figure 2.2).Figure 2.2 - Manual Transfer Switch OperationLOAD CONNECTED TO UTILITY POW'ERSOURCELOAD CONNECTED TO STANDBY POWER SOURCEMANUALTRANSFERHANDLETRANSFER SWITCHOPERATmNG LEVER5. To crank and start the engine, set theAUTO/OFF/MANUAL switch to MANUAL.6. Let the engine stabilize and warm up for a fewminutes.7. Set the generator's main circuit breaker to its ON (orclosed) position. The standby power source nowpowers the loads.2.5.2 TRANSFER BACK TO UTILITY POWERSOURCEWhen utility power has been restored, transfer back tothat source and shut down the generator. This can beaccomplished as follows:1. Set the generator's main circuit breaker to its OFF (oropen) position.2. Let the engine run for a minute or two at no-load tostabilize the internal temperatures.3. Set the generator's AUTO/OFF/MANUAL switch toits OFF (or open) position. The engine shouldshut down.4. Check that utility power supply to the transfer switchis turned OFF.z_Do not attempt to activate the transfer switchmanually until all power voltage suppliesto the switch have been positively turned off.Failure to turn off all power voltage suppliesmay result in extremely hazardous and possiblyfatal electrical shock.5. Use the manual transfer handle inside the transferswitch to move the main contacts back to theirUTILITY position, i.e., loads connected to the utilitypower source (Figure 2.2).6. Turn ON the utility power supply to the transferswitch using the means provided.7. Set the system to automatic operation as outlined in"Automatic Transfer Operation," Section 2.3.2.6 SETTING THE EXERCISE TIMERThis generator is equipped with an exercise timer. Onceit is set, the generator will start and exercise once everyseven days, on the day of the week and at the time of daythe following sequence is completed. During thisexercise period, the unit runs for approximately 12minutes and then shuts down. Transfer of loads to thegenerator output does not occur during the exercisecycle.A switch on the control panel (see Figure 2.1) permitsselection of the day and time for the system to exercise. At the chosen time, perform the following sequence toselect the desired day and time of day the system willexercise.1. Verify that the AUTO/OFF/MANUAL switch is setto AUTO.2. Hold down the "Set Exercise Time" switch until thegenerator starts (approximately 10 seconds) andthen release.3. The generator will start and run for approximately 12minutes and then shut down on its own. Theexerciser will then be set to run at that time of dayevery week.Carrier 1 1
