178. Place an empty container with a minimum capacity of 1.5litres under the hot water spout (fig. 4).Important! Danger di scottatureHot water containing acid flows out of the hot water spout.Avoid contact with splashes of water.9. Press the button to confirm that you have added thesolution.The message “Descale underway” is displayed.The descale programme starts and the descaler liquidcomes out of the water spout.The descale programme automatically performs a seriesof rinses and pauses to remove limescale deposits frominside the machine.After about 30 minutes, the message “Rinsing”“INSERT FILTER”(if present), “FILL TANK” is displayed.10. The appliance is now ready for rinsing through with cleanwater. Extract the water tank, empty, rinse under runningwater, fill with clean water up to the MAX level, insert thefilter (if removed previously) and put the water tank backin the machine. “Rinsing Confirm?” is displayed.11. Empty the container used to collect the descaler solutionand replace it empty under the cappuccino maker.12. Press the button to start rinsing. Hot water flowsout of the spout and the message “Rinsing Please wait” isdisplayed.13. When the water tank is completely empty, the message“Rinsing complete Confirm?” is displayed.14. Press the button.15. “Heating up Please wait” is displayed, at the end of whichthe machine will be ready for use.SETTING WATER HARDNESSThe DESCALE message is displayed after a period of timeestablished according to water hardness.The machine is set by default for a hardness value of 4.The machine can also be programmed according to thehardness of the mains water in the various regions so that themachine needs to be descaled less often.Measuring water hardness1. Remove the “TOTAL HARDNESS TEST” indicator paper fromits pack (attached to the English instructions).2. Immerse the paper completely in a glass of water for onesecond.3. Remove the paper from the water and shake lightly. Afterabout a minute, 1, 2, 3, or 4 red squares form, dependingon the hardness of the water. Each square corresponds toone level.soft water ●slightly hard water ●●hard water ●●●very hard water ●●●●Setting water hardness1. Press the P button to enter the menu.2. Turn the selection dial to select “Water hardness”.3. Press the button to confirm the selection.4. Turn the selection dial and set the hardness levelas measured by the indicator paper (see previousparagraph).5. Press the button to confirm the setting.6. Press the button to exit the menu.The machine is now reprogrammed with the new waterhardness setting.WATER SOFTENER FILTERCertain models are fitted with a water softener filter. If thisis not the case with your model, you are recommended topurchase one from De’Longhi Customer Services.To use the filter correctly, follow the instructions below.Installing the filter1. Remove the filter from the packaging.2. Turn the date indicator disk (see fig. 31) until the next twomonths of use are displayed.Please noteThe filter lasts about two months if the appliance is usednormally. If the coffee machine is left unused with the filterinstalled, it will last a maximum of three weeks.3. To activate the filter, run tap water through the hole in thefilter as shown in the figure until water comes out of theopenings at the side for more than a minute (fig. 32).4. Extract the tank fromthe appliance and fillwith water.5. Insert the filter inthe water tank andimmerse it completelyfor about ten minutes,sloping it to enable theair bubbles to escape.6. Insert the filter in the filter housing and press as far as itwill go.
