support.dell.com Checking Inside Your Computer 6-7CD-ROM DriveIf you completed the basic drive checks (refer to “Drives” in Chapter 4Chapter 4 and this chap-ter) and suspect a problem with a CD-ROM drive, perform the following checks:• Check for hardware conflicts as described in “Resolving Software and HardwareSoftware and HardwareIncompatibilities” in Chapter 5.• Click the Start button, point to Settings, and click Control Panel. InWindows 98, double-click the System icon and check the Performance tab forany abnormal indications. In Windows 2000, double-click they abnormal indications. In Windows 2000, double-click the AdministrativeveTools icon and check the Event Viewer.• Clear NVRAM as described in “Clearing NVRAM” in Appendix BM as described in “Clearing NVRAM” in Appendix B.Hard-Disk DriveIf you completed the basic drive checks (refer to “Drives” in Chapter 4he basic drive checks (refer to “Drives” in Chapter 4 and this chap-ter) and suspect a problem with a hard-disk drive, clear NVRAM as described inM as described in“Clearing NVRAM” in Appendix B.System BoardIf an error message indicates a system board problem, the boot routine does notutine does notcomplete (refer to “Start-Up Routine” in Chapter 4), or if the power supply fan doesnot spin when power is on, perform the following steps:1. Verify that the electrical outlet to which the computer is connected is properlyfunctioning. Test the electrical outlet with another electrical device, such as avice, such as alamp.2. Remove the computer cover and rotate the power supply as described in“Removing and Replacing the Computer Cover” and “Rotating the Power SupplyAway From the System Board” iBoard” in Chapter 2.3. Remove all expansion cards as described in “Removing Expansion Cards” inChapter 2.4. If the system does not boot, check connections and perform the following steps:wing steps:a. Reseat the control panel cable and power cable connectors from the powersupply to the system board (see Figure 2-5 for connector locations).b. Remove the hard-disk drive as described in step 4 of “Replacing the Hard-Disk Drive” in Chapter 3. Disconnect the DC power cable connectors to allother drives except for the 3.5-inch diskette drive and the CD-ROM drive.c. Disconnect all devices attached to the computer except the monitor and thekeyboard.yboard.5. Rotate the power supply back into position, replace the computer cover, andreconnect the system to an electrical outlet.
