These basic tasks can bebroken down into the two following sections:• Configuring a managed system’s BMC• Managing a remote managed system by accessing its BMCConfiguring the BMCTo configure the BMC in a pre-boot environment, you can use the System Maintenance Utility.Alternately, you can configure the BMC on a managed system with a running operating systemusing the Sever Administrator home page GUI or CLI.Managing the BMCTo manage a remote managed system by accessing its BMC in a pre-boot environment, or byaccessing the BMC of a nonresponsive system, you must use the BMC Management Utility. Toconfigure the BMC on a system with a running operating system or to preform everyday BMCmanagement tasks, you can use the Server Administrator home page GUI.Planning for Using Your System’s BMCHow you plan to use the BMC to manage your system dictates the configuration procedures youwill need to perform. The following are some likely configuration scenarios:• Configure BMC LAN alerting so that you can monitor your managed system using ITAssistant.• Configure BMC LAN Access so that you can use the BMC Management Utility’s IPMI Shellto access your system’s BMC over a shared LAN.• Configure BMC Serial Access so that you can use the BMC Management Utility’s IPMI Shellor a text console redirection to access your system’s BMC over a serial cable.• Configure BMC Serial Over LAN Access so that you can use the BMC Management Utility’sSOL Proxy to access your system’s BMC over a shared LAN to activate console redirection.Consult the BMC Configuration Matrix (Figure 1-1), as well as the sections describing each likelyconfiguration scenario, before moving on to the next chapter "Configuring Your Managed System."
