This appliance has a pilot which lightsautomatically when using the sup-plied wall switch or remote control.If you have a power outage, the pilotmay be lighted by hand with push-button piezo ignitor. When lightingthe pilot, the following warningsmust be followed.B. BEFORE LIGHTING smell allaround the appliance area for gas. Besure to smell next to the floor becausesome gas is heavier than air and willsettle on the floor.WHAT TO DO IF YOU SMELLGAS• Do not try to light any appliance.• Do not touch any electric switch;do not use any phone in your building.• Immediately call your gas supplierfrom a neighbor’s phone. Followthe gas supplier’s instructions.• If you cannot reach your gas sup-plier, call the fire department.C. Electric Power Outage Only: Use onlyyour hand to turn the manual over-ride handle on the gas control knob.Never use tools. If the knob will notturn by hand, don’t try to repair it,call a qualified service technician orgas supplier. Force or attempted re-pair may result in a fire or explosion.D. Do not use this appliance if any parthas been under water. Immediatelycall a qualified service technician toinspect the appliance and to replaceany part of the control system andany gas control which has been un-der water.WARNING: You must operatethis heater with the fireplacescreen in place. Make sure fire-place screen is in place beforerunning heater.NOTICE: During initial operationof new heater, burning logs willgive off a paper-burning smell.Open damper or window to ventsmell. This will only last a fewhours.1. STOP! Read the safety information,in column 1.2. Make sure equipment shutoff valveis fully open.3. Wait five (5) minutes to clear out anygas. Smell for gas around heater andnear floor. If you smell gas, STOP!Follow “B” in the safety informationon warnings plate. If you don’t smellgas, go to the next step.A. Using Supplied Wall Switch1. Set manual ignition bypass switch onthe control panel to the OFF position(automatic ignition position).2. Press ON/OFF button. Hold for 6seconds. Gas valve will open and elec-tronic ignition will begin sparking tolight pilot. LED will light.Note: You may be running thisheater for the first time after connect-ing to gas supply or at the start ofyour heating season. If so, the ON/OFF button may need to be pressedagain. This will allow air to bleedfrom gas system. If several attemptsto light pilot fail, contact a qualifiedservice person or gas supplier for re-pairs. Until repairs are made, lightand operate manually (see ManualLighting Instructions for ElectricPower Outage, page 21).3. When pilot flame is lit, the thermo-couple is heated by the flame. Locate slot at bottom of remote control(see Figure 48). Firmly insert tool such asa small screwdriver, butter knife, or dimeinto the slot and lift up to remove cover.2. Insert supplied battery into remotecontrol. Positive and negative aremarked inside remote control casing.Note: Remote will not function if bat-tery is not installed correctly.3.
