Fabricate a hearth extensionusing a material which meets the followingspecifications: a layer of noncombustible, inorganic material having a thermal conduc-tivity of K=0.84 BTU IN/FT, HR. F (or less) at1" thick. For example, if the material selectedhas a K factor of 0.25, such as glass fiber, thefollowing formula would apply:0.25 x 1.0" = 0.30" thickness required0.84Thermal conductivity "K" of materials can beobtained from the manufacturer or supplier ofthe noncombustible material. If the hearth ex-tension is to be covered, use noncombustiblematerial such as tile, slate, brick, concrete, metal, glass, marble, stone, etc. Providea means to prevent hearth extension fromshifting and seal gap between fireplace frameand hearth extension with a noncombustiblematerial (see Figure 3).WARNING: Hearth extensionis to be installed only as shownin Figure 3.Fireplace insTallaTionContinuedFigure 3 - Hearth ExtensionSeal GapFireplace FrontEmber ProtectorFireplace FrontRaised HearthFireplace FrontElevatedEmber ProtectorEmber ProtectorSeal GapHearthExtensionMANTELSA mantel may be installed if desired (see Figure4). Woodwork such as wood trims, mantels orany other combustible material projecting fromthe front face must not be placed within 12" ofthe fireplace opening. Combustible materialsabove 12" and projecting more than 1 1/2" fromthe fireplace must not be placed less than 15"from top opening of fireplace (NFPA STD 211,Sec. 7-3.3.3).Mantels or any other combustible mate-rial also may come up to side edge of blackmetal face of fireplace as long as projectionfrom front face fall within the limit shown inFigure 4.12 1 /4 " Ref.15" Min.12" Min.11 /2" Max.3" Nom.33°CombustibleMaterialSafeZone forProjection ofCombustibleMaterialsFireplaceOpeningUpperSection ofFireplaceFigure 4 - Mantel Clearances toCombustible MaterialFIREBOXSAFE ZONETop View of Fireplace3" Max.4.5"Min. toPerpendicularSide Wall12"7.75"33°CombustibleMaterial MustNot OverlapFront Face6"Ref.
