The Type VCP-WRVacuum Circuit Breaker is a fixed design, with thecustomer responsible for all required interfaces andbarriers. Either design is for use in new switchgear, aswell as for modernization and life extension of existingswitchgear. The circuit breakers meet or exceed allapplicable ANSI and IEEE Standards.Circuit breakers are operated by a motor chargedspring type stored energy mechanism, chargednormally by an electric motor or manually by a manualcharging tool. The primary disconnecting contacts areself-aligning, silver plated copper. VCP-W CircuitBreakers are of a modular type construction containinga front accessible mechanism with unobstructed accessto control components. Self-contained vacuuminterrupter pole unit assemblies are removable ascomplete individual units. The primary insulation used in the circuit breaker designis cycloaliphatic epoxy. Type SIS, AWG #14 control wirewithFigure 5-1 Rear View Showing Pole Unit Enclosure(VCP-W Shown)cross-linked polyolefin insulation is used throughoutthe control circuits with all terminals being of thescrew type. This section describes the overalloperation of the circuit breaker as well as thefunction and operation of all major sub-assembliesand/or parts.5-2 INTERRUPTER ASSEMBLYThe VCP-W and VCP-WR 38kV design utilizesthree individually mounted and removable poleunits. Each pole unit is enclosed in a four sidedcontinuous chimney type cycloaliphatic epoxysupport molding. Black insulating shrouds cover andseal the openings where upper and lower primaryconductors enter and exit the cycloali-phatic epoxyenclosure (Figure 5-1). The disconnecting ends ofthe primary conductors utilize round, floating typeprimary disconnecting finger clusters for interfacingwith the switchgear structure mounted primaryconductors. The rear portion of the circuit breaker, on which thepole units are mounted, utilizes a bolted on plate tocover a rectangular opening in the truck for circuitbreakers above 1600 amperes. Closure of theopening provides for proper air circulation upthrough each pole unit enclosure on 2000 ampereand above circuit breakers (Figure 5-2).Figure 5-2 Plate Over Rear Truck Opening 2000ABreakers and Above (VCP- W Shown)
