B Garmin G1000 Pilot’s Guide for Beechcraft 58/G58 8-17AUTOMATIC FLIGHTCONTROL SYSTEM8.4 AUTOPILOT AND YAWDAMPER OPERATIONThe Beechcraft 58/G58’s Autopilot and Yaw Damperoperate the flight control surface servos to provide auto-matic flight control. The Autopilot controls the aircraft pitch and roll at-titudes following commands received from the Flight Di-rector. Pitch Autotrim provides trim commands to thepitch trim servo to relieve any sustained effort required bythe pitch servo. The Yaw Damper reduces Dutch roll tendencies andcoordinates turns. It can operate independently of theAutopilot and may be used during normal hand-flightmaneuvers. Yaw rate commands are limited by the YawDamper.FLIGHT CONTROLPitch and roll commands provided to the GSA 81 ser-vos are based on the active Flight Director modes. Yawdamping is provided by a GSA 81 servo. Servo motorcontrol limits the maximum servo speed and torque.Pitch Axis and TrimThe Autopilot pitch axis uses pitch rate to stabilize theaircraft pitch attitude during aircraft upsets and Flight Di-rector maneuvers. Flight Director pitch commands arerate- and attitude-limited, combined with pitch dampercontrol, and sent to the pitch servo motor. The pitch servo measures the output effort (torque)and provides this signal to the pitch trim servo. The pitchtrim servo commands the motor to reduce the averagepitch servo effort. When the Autopilot is not engaged, the pitch trim servomay be used to provide Manual Electric Pitch Trim. Thisallows the aircraft to be trimmed using a control wheelswitch rather than the trim wheel. Trim speeds are sched-uled with airspeed to provide more consistent response.Roll AxisThe Autopilot roll axis uses roll rate to stabilize theaircraft roll attitude during upsets or Flight Director ma-neuvers. Flight Director roll commands are rate- and at-titude-limited, combined with roll damper control, andsent to the roll servo motor.Yaw AxisThe Yaw Damper uses yaw rate and roll attitude todampen the aircraft’s natural Dutch roll response. It alsouses lateral acceleration to coordinate turns. Yaw Damperoperation is independent of Autopilot engagement.Emergency Control OverrideNOTE: Refer to the POH for specific instructionsregarding emergency procedures. The GSM 85 servo mounts are equipped with slip-clutches set to certain values. This allows the servos to beoverridden in case of an emergency.
