This is a function of the formatand does not indicate any problem withyour AVR55.PCM Audio PlaybackPCM (Pulse Code Modulation) is thenon-compressed digital audio systemused for compact discs and non-AC-3laser discs. The digital circuits in theAVR55 are capable of high-quality digital-to-analog decoding, and they may beconnected directly to the digital audiooutput of your CD or LV player.Connections should be made to theAC-3/PCM Optical or Coaxial inputs¶ f on the rear panel, using whicheverinput is not occupied by an AC-3 sourcesuch as a DVD player.To play a PCM source, first select thedesired input using the InputSelectors ) $ % ^ * d e.Next, choose either an Optical or Coaxialdigital source using the Digital InputSelector h ı. Finally, select anySurround mode other than Dolby Digital.Tuner OperationThe AVR55’s tuner is capable of tuningAM, FM and FM Stereo broadcast stations.Stations may be tuned manually, or theymay be stored as favorite station presetsand recalled from a 30 position memory.Station Selection1. Press the AM/FM button 8 i toselect the tuner as an input.2. Press the AM/FM button 8i againto switch between AM and FM so that thedesired frequency band is selected.3. Press the Tuning Mode button 6 qto select manual or automatic tuning.When the AUTO indicator is illuminatedin the main information display thetuner will only stop at those stations thathave a strong enough signal to bereceived with acceptable quality.If the AUTO indicator is NOT illumin-ated, the tuner is in a manual mode andwill stop at each frequency increment inthe selected band.4. To manually tune stations, press theright side of the Tune button 9 to tunea station with a higher frequency, or theleft side to tune a station with a lower fre-quency. When the TUNED indicatorilluminates, the station is properly tunedand should be heard with clarity. Toautomatically search for the next stationwith acceptable signal strength, pressand hold the Tune button 9 until theAUTO indicator lights. Release it and thetuner will stop when it finds a station.When a station is weak, audio qualitywill be improved by pressing the FMMode button 6 until the STEREOindicator L goes out.5. To select stations using the remote,press the Manual Tune ‹‹ / ›› but-tons r to select stations one at a time.Alternatively, the Automatic Tune‹‹ / ›› buttons t may be used toscan only those stations with sufficientstrength for proper reception. Each pressof these buttons will advance the tuner tothe next station. For FM stereo receptionpress the FM Mode button q until theSTEREO indicator is illuminated.NOTE: When the FM reception of astation is weak, audio quality will beincreased by switching to mono modeby pressing the Tuning Mode button6 q until the STEREO indicator goesout.Preset TuningUp to 30 stations may be stored in theAVR55’s memory for easy recall using thefront panel controls or the remote.To enter a station to the memory, firsttune the station using the steps outlinedabove. Then:1. Press the Memo button 4 u onthe front panel or remote. Note that theMEMORY indicator will illuminate andflash in the information display.2. Within five seconds, press theNumeric Buttons 37 w correspond-ing to the location where you wish tostore this station’s frequency. To enter astation to memory location “30,” pressonly the 0 button.3. Repeat the process after tuning anyadditional stations to be preset.28
