44 OPERATIONOperationBasic OperationOnce you have completed the setup and configu-ration of the AVR, it is simple to operate andenjoy. The following instructions should be fol-lowed for you to maximize your enjoyment ofyour new receiver:Before using the AVR 745, we strongly recom-mend that you program the TC 30 remote,following the instructions provided in both theseparate TC 30 Installation Guide and thewizards available when the TC 30 is connected tothe Internet through your computer. While theTC 30 is preprogrammed to operate the AVR 745and Harman Kardon DVD players right out of thebox, programming the TC 30 for all the compo-nents in your system and setting it up for theactivities that best match the way you use yourhome entertainment system will greatly add tothe enjoyment of your total home entertainmentsystem.Turning the AVR On or Off• When using the AVR for the first time, you mustpress the Main Power Switch 1 on the frontpanel to turn the unit on. This places the unit in aStandby mode, as indicated by the amber color ofthe Power Indicator 3. Once the unit is inStandby, you may begin a listening session bypressing the System Power Control 2 or theSource button % on the front panel or theAVR Selector B. Note that the PowerIndicator 3 will turn blue. This will turn the uniton and return it to the input source that was lastused. The unit may also be turned on from Standbyby pressing any of the Source Selector buttonson the remote BCD or the Source button% on the front panel.• To turn the AVR 745 on using the TC 30remote:• Press the Screen Button 6 next to one ofthe Activities shown on the LCD screen. Thepreprogrammed Activities include the remotecontrol codes that not only turn on the AVR 745,but also switch it to the input associated withthe Activity and turn on a compatibleHarman Kardon DVD player when it is part of theActivity. If you have programmed the TC 30 foryour own Activities, other devices will turn onand operate as specified in the Activity design.• Press the Devices Button 4 and thenpress the Screen Button 6 to the left ofAVR. When the options on the LCD screenchange, press the Screen Button 6 to theright of O N to turn the unit on or the one next toOFF to place it in the Standby mode.• When using the ZR 10 remote, press the AVRSelector B to turn the unit on and select thelast source that was used. Press any of the InputSelectors D, or source-specific buttons suchas the Tuner Selector C or TheBridge/DMP Selector Button to bothturn the AVR 745 on and select that specificsource.Whenever the AVR is turned on, you will see allof the front-panel indicators light up for a fewseconds. This is normal, and it is part of the unit’spower-on self-test procedure.Note: When an Input Selector or source-specificbutton on the ZR 10 remote BCD isused to turn the AVR 745 on, press the AVRSelector B to use the remote for control of theAVR 745.To turn the unit off at the end of a listening ses-sion, simply press the System Power Control2 on the front panel or the Power Off Button2A on the remote. Power will be shut off toany equipment plugged into the rear panelSwitched AC Outlets and the PowerIndicator 3 will turn orange.When the remote is used to turn the unit “off” itis actually placing the system in a Standby mode,as indicated by the orange color of the PowerIndicator 3.When you will be away from home for anextended period of time it is always a good ideato completely turn the unit off with the frontpanel Main Power Switch 1.NOTE: All preset memories may be lost if theunit is left turned off with the Main PowerSwitch 1 for more than two weeks.Using the Sleep Timer• To set the AVR 745 to turn off after apredetermined time period, press the DevicesButton 4, followed by the Screen Button6 at the top of the row of buttons on the leftside of the TC 30, to the left of the A/V receiverimage on the LCD screen. Next, press the PageLeft/Right Buttons 8 to view PAGE 2 ofthe AVR functions.• To put the AVR in the Sleep mode, press theScreen Button 6 to the right of the wordSLEEP in the LCD. Each press of the buttonwill decrease the time before the AVR shutsdown in the following sequence.Once you have set the desired Sleep Time, thefront-panel display will automatically dim to half-brightness. The display will return to full-brightness when any button on the front panel ora remote is pressed, and then return again tohalf-brightness. To check on the time remaininguntil the unit shuts down, follow the instructionsshown above to access the Screen Button 6for Sleep and press it once.To cancel the Sleep function, follow theinstructions shown above to access the ScreenButton 6 for Sleep and press it first until theinformation display returns to normal brightnessand then again as many times as needed untilthe words SLEEP OFF appear in the LowerDisplay Line ˜.When you will be away from home for anextended period of time, it is always a good ideato completely turn the unit off with the front-panel Main Power Switch 1.Source Selection• To select a source, press any of the SourceSelector buttons on the remoteBCD.NOTE: After pressing one of the Input Selectorbuttons CD to turn the unit on, press theAVR Selector B to have the remote control theAVR functions.• The input source may also be changed bypressing the front-panel Input Source Selectorbutton %. Each press of the button will movethe input selection through the list of availableinputs.• Two options are available for selecting an inputsource using the TC 30 remote.• Pressing the Activities Button 3 will dis-play the list of preprogrammed activities. Pressthe Screen Button 6 next to any activity toturn the unit on, select the input source shown,and perform any other steps that have beenprogrammed into the activity.• To directly select a source, first press theDevices Button 4 and then press theScreen Button 6 to the left of A VRECEIVER at the top of the list of optionson the LCD Screen 7.
