Installation and Connections5Cables run inside walls should have theappropriate markings to indicate listingwith UL (“CL-2/CL-3”), CSA (“FT-4”) orappropriate safety agency standards thatmay be required in your area. Questionsabout running cables inside walls shouldbe referred to your installer or a licensedelectrical contractor who is familiar withthe NEC and/or the applicable buildingor electrical codes in your area.Connections to SpeakersThe final step of the installation processis to connect the amplifier to your speak-ers using high-quality cable. A pair ofbinding posts is provided for each chan-nel output. These posts will accept barewire or banana-type plugs.Note that one conductor of the speakercable will have no markings or an indi-cation of “-” for negative polarity, andthe other will have a red line, brand-name markings, a colored thread orsome other positive-polarity indication. The wire with the positive indicationshould be connected to the red terminalson both the PA5800 and your speakers. The negative wire should be connected tothe black terminal on the PA5800 andthe speakers. If bare wire is used for connections, stripapproximately 3/4” (20mm) of insula-tion from the end of each wire and care-fully twist the strands of each conductortogether. Be careful not to cut the indi-vidual strands or twist them off; for opti-mal performance, all strands must beused.Next, loosen the knobs of the speakeroutput terminals far enough so that thecap moves back on its threads past theU-shaped groove at the back end of theterminal. Making certain that youobserve polarity by connecting the nega-tive (-) wire to the black terminal andthe positive (+) wire to the red terminal, pass the exposed wire through from thetop of the slot until the wire is visiblefrom the bottom end. Holding the wire inplace, twist the cap back so that the con-nection is secured. Do not overtighten oruse tools, as this may damage the plasticterminal cap or break the delicate wirestrands and decrease system perfor-mance.Important Note: When makingspeaker wire connections, be certain thatnone of the strands from one lead touchany other lead. This will cause a shortcircuit and may damage you amplifier orspeakers. Damage from short circuitscaused in this manner is not covered bythe product warranty.Connections may also be made usingstandard 4mm OD banana plugs. Beforeusing a banana-type jack, make certainthat the plastic screw caps on the PA5800are firmly tightened by turning themclockwise until they are snug against thechassis. This will ensure that the maxi-mum surface area of the plug is in con-tact with the jack. Once the wire has beenattached to the banana plug followingthe plug manufacturer’s instructions, simply insert the banana plug into thehole provided on the rear of the coloredscrew caps on the terminal posts. Be cer-tain to observe proper polarity. Finally, run the cables to the speakerlocations. It is highly recommended thatthe length of cable connecting any pairof speakers be identical. For example, make certain that the cable length con-necting left and right front or left andright rear (surround) speakers isidentical, even though one speaker maybe physically closer to the amplifier thanthe other. Do not coil any excess cable, asthis may become an inductor that createsfrequency response variations in yoursystem.Connect the wires to the speakers, againbeing certain to observe proper polarity.Remember to connect the negative orblack wire to the matching terminal onthe speaker. Similarly, the positive or redwire should be connected to the like ter-minal on the speaker.NOTE: While most speaker manufactur-ers adhere to an industry standard ofusing black terminals for negative andred ones for positive, some manufactur-ers may not adhere to this configuration. To ensure properly phased connectionsand optimal performance, consult theidentification plate on your speaker ter-minals, or the speaker’s manual to verifypolarity. If you do not know the polarityof your speaker, ask your dealer orinstaller for advice before proceeding, orconsult the speaker’s manufacturer.
