Chapter 4. Removing and replacing server componentsThis chapter describes how to remove and replace certain server components. SeeChapter 3, “Parts listing, Type 8863,” on page 105 to determine whether thecomponent that is being replaced is a Tier 1 or Tier 2 customer-replaceable unit(CRU), or a field-replaceable unit (FRU).v Installation of Tier 1 CRUs is your responsibility. If IBM installs a Tier 1 CRU atyour request, you will be charged for the installation. You may install a Tier 2CRU yourself or request IBM to install it, at no additional charge, under the typeof warranty service that is designated for your server.v Installation of FRUs is intended only for trained service technicians who arefamiliar with IBM xSeries products.Installation guidelinesBefore you install options, read the following information:v Read the safety information that begins on page vii and the guidelines in“Handling static-sensitive devices” on page 112. This information will help youwork safely.v Observe good housekeeping in the area where you are working. Place removedcovers and other parts in a safe place.v If you must start the server while the cover is removed, make sure that no one isnear the server and that no tools or other objects have been left inside theserver.v Do not attempt to lift an object that you think is too heavy for you. If you have tolift a heavy object, observe the following precautions:– Make sure that you can stand safely without slipping.– Distribute the weight of the object equally between your feet.– Use a slow lifting force. Never move suddenly or twist when you lift a heavyobject.– To avoid straining the muscles in your back, lift by standing or by pushing upwith your leg muscles.v Make sure that you have an adequate number of properly grounded electricaloutlets for the server, monitor, and other devices.v Back up all important data before you make changes to disk drives.v Have a small flat-blade screwdriver available.v You do not have to turn off the server to install or replace hot-swap powersupplies, hot-swap fans, or hot-plug Universal Serial Bus (USB) devices.v Blue on a component indicates touch points, where you can grip the componentto remove it from or install it in the server, open or close a latch, and so on.v Orange on a component or an orange label on or near a component indicatesthat the component can be hot-swapped, which means that if the server andoperating system support hot-swap capability, you can remove or install thecomponent while the server is running. (Orange can also indicate touch points onhot-swap components.) See the instructions for removing or installing a specifichot-swap component for any additional procedures that you might have toperform before you remove or install the component.v When you are finished working on the server, reinstall all safety shields, guards, labels, and ground wires.© Copyright IBM Corp. 2005 111
