Chapter 3. Installing optional devicesUse this information for instructions about installing optional hardware devices inthe blade server and assembling blade servers into a scalable blade complex. Somedevice-removal instructions are provided in case you have to remove one device toinstall another.Note: If you are installing devices in a scalable blade complex, remember to installthem in both BladeCenter HX5 blade servers in the complex.Installation guidelinesUse these guidelines before you install the blade server or optional devices.v Before you begin, read “Safety” on page v and “Handling static-sensitivedevices” on page 24. This information helps you work safely.v When you install your new blade server, take the opportunity to download andapply the most recent firmware updates. This step helps ensure that any knownissues are addressed and that your blade server is ready to function atmaximum levels of performance.v Observe good housekeeping in the area where you are working. Place removedcovers and other parts in a safe place.v Back up all important data before you make changes to disk drives.v Before you remove a blade server from the BladeCenter chassis, you must shutdown the operating system and turn off the blade server. You do not need toshut down the chassis itself.v Blue on a component indicates touch points, where you can grip the componentto remove it from or install it in the blade server, open or close a latch, and soon.v For a list of supported optional devices for the blade server, seehttp://www.ibm.com/servers/eserver/serverproven/compat/us/eserver.html .System reliability guidelinesUse these guidelines to ensure that the blade server meets the proper cooling andsystem reliability requirements.v To ensure proper cooling, do not operate the BladeCenter chassis without ablade server or blade filler installed in each blade server bay. See thedocumentation for your BladeCenter chassis for additional information.v Each microprocessor socket always contains either a microprocessor dust coverand heat sink filler or a microprocessor and heat sink. If the blade server hasonly one microprocessor, it must be installed in microprocessor socket 1.v Make sure that the ventilation holes on the blade server are not blocked.v The blade server battery must be operational. If the battery becomes defective, replace it immediately. For instructions, see the Problem Determination and ServiceGuide.© Copyright IBM Corp. 2011 23
