Chapter 5. Installing and removing replaceable unitsThis chapter provides instructions for replacing units on the blade server.Replaceable units are components, such as memory modules, the hard disk drive,and I/O expansion cards. (Some removal instructions are provided in case youneed to remove one replaceable unit to install another.)The following replaceable units are supported:v Batteryv IDE hard disk (one only)v The bezel assembly (control panel)v InfiniBand cards (optional)Installation guidelinesBefore you begin, read the following information:v Read the safety information beginning on page v and the guidelines in “Handlingstatic-sensitive devices” on page 22. This information will help you work safelywith the blade server and options.v Read the information in .v Back up all important data before you make changes to disk drives.v Have a small flat-blade screwdriver and a Phillips screwdriver available.v You do not have to turn off the blade server or disconnect the BladeCenter unitfrom power to install or replace any of the hot-swap modules on the rear of theBladeCenter unit.v Before you remove a hot-swap blade server from the BladeCenter unit, you mustshut down the operating system by typing the shutdown -h now command. If theblade server was not turned off, press the power-control button (behind theblade-server control-panel door) to turn off the blade server. You do not have toshut down the BladeCenter unit itself.v Blue on a component indicates touch points, where you can grip the componentto remove it from or install it in the blade server or BladeCenter unit, open orclose a latch, and so on.v Orange on a component or an orange label on or near a component indicatesthat the component can be hot-swapped, which means that if the blade server orBladeCenter unit and operating system support hot-swap capability, you canremove or install the component while the blade server or BladeCenter unit isrunning. (Orange can also indicate touch points on hot-swap components.) Seethe instructions for removing or installing a specific hot-swap component for anyadditional procedures that you might have to perform before you remove orinstall the component.System reliability guidelinesTo help ensure proper cooling and system reliability, make sure that:v The ventilation holes on the blade server are not blocked.v Each of the blade bays on the front of the BladeCenter unit has a blade server orfiller blade installed. Do not operate the BladeCenter unit for more than 1 minutewithout a blade server or filler blade installed in each blade bay.v You have followed the reliability guidelines in the documentation that comes withthe BladeCenter unit.© Copyright IBM Corp. 2005 21
