Chapter 6. Configuring the blade serverThis chapter contains the configuration tasks that you must perform so that you canuse the IBM BladeCenter Management Module command-line interface. Thischapter also describes other configuration requirements for the blade server.After you install the blade server in the BladeCenter unit, the blade server isautomatically configured. The blade server is automatically reconfigured after youinstall software or hardware. IBM periodically make firmware updates available forthe blade server. Before you continue, make sure that the blade server has thelatest version of firmware code. For additional information, see “Upgrading thesystem firmware” on page 48.Because the firmware code in the blade server uses auto-configuration, additionalblade-server configuration programs are not required for the blade server. However,if you have attached other devices to the blade server or the BladeCenter unit, youmust configure those devices as described in the applicable documentation thatcomes with those devices or the BladeCenter unit.You do not have to set any passwords to use the blade server. If you change thebattery or replace the system-board assembly, you must reset the date and timethrough your operating system.For information about setting up your network configuration for remotemanagement, see the IBM BladeCenter Planning and Installation Guide or the IBMBladeCenter T Installation and User’s Guide located at http://www.ibm.com/pc/support/ on the World Wide Web.Notes:v The BladeCenter unit needs to be configured only once.v If your blade server contains a different type of optional Ethernet-compatibleswitch module in I/O bay 1 than the switch modules that are mentioned in thischapter, see the documentation that comes with the Ethernet switch module thatyou are using.v Before you can run programs on the blade server, you must install an operatingsystem on the blade server. For information about installing the operating system,see Chapter 7, “Installing the operating system,” on page 51.v Throughout this document, the Management Module Web-based user interface isalso known as the BladeCenter Management Module Web interface.v Throughout this document, the user name is also known as the user identifier oruser ID for logging on to the management module.Communicating with the blade serverYou can access the blade server through:v The management module, either through– The Web-based management and configuration program.
