Installing optionsThis chapter provides the basic information needed to install options in your server.This section is for all users, but is written with the experienced user in mind. If youneed more detailed installation information, see the User’s Reference on the xSeriesDocumentation CD.Attention: When you handle Electrostatic Discharge-Sensitive devices (ESD), takeprecautions to avoid damage from static electricity. For details on handling thesedevices, see “Handling static-sensitive devices” on page x.Working inside a server with power onYour server supports hot-plug, hot-add, and hot-swap devices and is designed tooperate safely while turned on with the cover removed. Follow these guidelines whenyou work inside a server that is turned on:• Avoid loose-fitting clothing on your forearms. Button long-sleeved shirts beforeworking inside the server; do not wear cufflinks while you are working inside theserver.• Do not allow your necktie or scarf to hang inside the server.• Remove jewelry, such as bracelets, necklaces, rings, and loose-fitting wristwatches.• Remove items from your shirt pocket (such as pens or pencils) that could fall intothe server as you lean over it.• Take care to avoid dropping any metallic objects, such as paper clips, hair pins, orscrews, into the server.Installing adaptersThis section describes how to install PCI adapters. Before you continue with theadapter-installation procedure, review the following:• Slot 1 supports hot-plug, 32-bit, 33-MHz, PCI adapters.• Slots 2–4 support hot-plug, 64-bit, 66-MHz, PCI adapters.• Slots 5 and 6 support hot-plug, 64-bit, 33 MHz, PCI adapters.For more detailed instructions and information, see the User’s Reference on the xSeriesDocumentation CD.
