If you set a power-on password for a user and an administrator password for asystem administrator, you can type either password to complete the system startup.A system administrator who types the administrator password has access to the fullConfiguration/Setup Utility menu; the system administrator can give the userauthority to set, change, and delete the power-on password. A user who types thepower-on password has access to only the limited Configuration/Setup Utility menu;the user can set, change, and delete the power-on password, if the systemadministrator has given the user that authority.Power-on passwordIf a power-on password is set, when you turn on the server, you must type thepower-on password to complete the system startup. You can use any combinationof up to seven characters (A - Z, a - z, and 0 - 9) for the password.If a power-on password is set, you can enable the Unattended Start mode, in whichthe keyboard and mouse remain locked but the operating system can start. You canunlock the keyboard and mouse by typing the power-on password.Administrator passwordIf an administrator password is set, you must type the administrator password foraccess to the full Configuration/Setup Utility menu. You can use any combination ofup to seven characters (A - Z, a - z, and 0 - 9) for the password. TheAdministrator Password choice is on the Configuration/Setup Utility menu only ifan optional IBM Remote Supervisor Adapter II is installed.Resetting passwordsIf you forget the power-on password or administrator password, you can regainaccess to the server in any of the following ways:v If an administrator password is set, type the administrator password at thepassword prompt. Start the Configuration/Setup Utility program and reset thepower-on password.v Remove the battery from the server and then reinstall it. See the ProblemDetermination and Service Guide on the IBM System x Documentation CD forinstructions for removing the battery.v Change the pin position of the clear CMOS (password override) jumper on thesystem board to bypass the power-on password and administrator passwordcheck (see “Erasing a lost or forgotten password (clearing CMOS)”).Erasing a lost or forgotten password (clearing CMOS)If you forget the power-on or administrator password, you can change the pinposition of the clear CMOS jumper on the system board to bypass the power-on oradministrator password check. This enables you to reset these passwords.To erase a forgotten password, complete the following steps:1. Review the safety information that begins on page v and “Handlingstatic-sensitive devices” on page 16.2. Turn off the server and all attached devices.3. Disconnect the power cord.4. Remove the side cover (see “Removing the side cover” on page 17).5. Locate the clear CMOS recovery jumper (JP1) on the system board, removingany adapters that impede access to the jumper.Chapter 3.
