Thefront Optical Digital Output is intended for tem-porary connection of an MD recorder or anyother portable device that has a digital input. The rear Coaxial Output should be used for morepermanent hookups, such as a CD recorder, MDrecorder, high-end computer sound card withdigital inputs or MP3 encoder. Neither opticalnor coaxial cables are supplied with this productand, if not included with the connecting unit, should be purchased separately. To use the Optical Digital Output, remove thedust protection cap from the connector andfirmly connect an optical digital cable (notsupplied) so that the shapes of both the cableand the connector match. Keep the dustprotection cap in a safe place, and alwaysre-attach the cap when not using the connectorto prevent dust from entering the connector.LoudspeakersBe sure to turn Power ¡ 1 off before con-necting the loudspeakers. The main unit and the loudspeakers aredesigned to work best together. JBL does notrecommend the use of any other speakers withthe main unit, or the use of JBL Soundgearspeakers with a product other than this specificJBL Soundgear source unit.In these instructions, the “right speaker” and“left speaker” refer to the speakers as viewedfrom the listening position.Speakers and electronics have corresponding (+)and (–) terminals. JBL has used red to denotethe (+) terminal and speaker wire, and black forthe (–) terminal and speaker wire. It is importantto connect both speakers identically: (+) on thespeaker to (+) on the main unit, and (–) on thespeaker to (–) on the main unit. Wiring “out ofphase” results in thin sound, weak bass and apoor stereo image.(SG2020)Insert the bare end of the red (+) wire of theright speaker into the red (+) terminal on themain unit that is marked R . Insert the bareend of the black (–) wire of the right speakerinto the black (–) terminal on the main unit thatis marked R . Follow the same procedureto connect the wires from the left speaker tothe terminals on the main unit that aremarked L .Figure 2(SG3030)In order to provide superior definition andclarity, the JBL Soundgear SG3030 speakers usea different method of connection for the tweeterand midrange sections. For proper performance,be sure to connect all three wires from eachspeaker as described below:Insert the yellow RCA-type plug from the rightspeaker into the yellow jack on the back of themain unit that is marked R (SpeakerConnector 1 in Figure 3).Note: Never insert the yellow plugsinto any equipment other than theJBL Soundgear main unit or you maycause damage to the speakers that is notcovered by your JBL warranty.Never insert any plugs other than the yel-low plugs attached to JBL Soundgear loud-speakers into the yellow jacks on theJBL Soundgear main unit or you willcause damage that is not covered by yourJBL warranty.Insert the bare end of the red (+) wire of theright speaker into the red (+) terminal on themain unit that is marked R . Insert the bareend of the black (–) wire of the right speakerinto the black (–) terminal on the main unit thatis marked R . Follow the same procedure toconnect the wires on the left speaker to the jackand terminals on the back of the main unit thatare marked L .Figure 3Using JBL Soundgear With anExternal Powered SubwooferThe SG2020 and SG3030 both feature aSubwoofer Output jack that can be usedwith any JBL powered subwoofer recommendedby your JBL dealer. The addition of a poweredsubwoofer dramatically extends and improvesyour system’s bass response, and is highly rec-ommended either at the time of initial purchaseor as a future upgrade. Using a single RCA cable(not included), connect the subwoofer output tothe L or R input of the powered subwoofer (theuse of a Y-cable is not necessary but is OK). Setthe main unit to a normal listening level, andadjust the level, frequency and phase controlson the powered subwoofer as directed in thesubwoofer’s owner’s manual.48Left speakerLeftSubwooferSpeakerConnector 2(Optional)Right speakerRightSpeakerConnector 1Main speakeroutput jacks(high frequency)RLWOOFERSUBWOOFERLR494649494646Left SpeakerSubwooferSUBWOOFER(Optional)Right SpeakerRedBlackRedBlackLR49494947RAUDIO OUTDIGITAL OUT DIGITAL OUTDIGITALINPUTLAUX1/MP3L-AUX1/ MP3-ROptical-fibercableMD recorder,MP3 player etc.
