Page 10 FloPro Series Pumps Installation and Operation Manual3.1.4 Pipe Sizing3.1.3.1 Suction PipeWhen the pump is located up to 50 feet from thepool, the recommended Schedule 40 minimum pipe sizefor the suction side of the pump is 1½" for .75 HP and2" for 1 to 2 HP. For 2.5 HP pumps, the recommendedpipe size is 2½".3.1.3.2 Discharge PipeWhen the pump is located up to 50 feet from thepool, the recommended Schedule 40 minimum pipe sizefor the discharge side of the pump is 1½" for .75 HP and2" for 1 to 2 HP. For 2.5 HP pumps, the recommendedpipe size is 2½".NOTE All pipe sizes (Schedule 40) are able towithstand the pressures the pump will deliver, but not necessarily the flow. If the pipe is toosmall for the pump, or if the pump is elevatedabove water, the maximum gallons per minute(GPM) may not be delivered. If this happens, the pump will develop an air pocket (cavitation)that will make noise, and the life of the pumpmay be shortened.3.1.3.3 Installation Recommendations1. If the pump is located below water level, isolationvalves must be installed on both sides of the pumpto prevent the back flow of pool water during anyroutine or required servicing.2. To help prevent difficulty in priming, install thesuction pipe without high points, which can trapair. (High points are inverted ‘U’s above the inletof a pump. In plumbing, they are commonlyreferred to as airlocks.) For installations ofequipment up to 100 feet from the water, refer tothe pipe sizing chart in Table 2. For installations ofequipment more than 100 feet from the water, therecommended pipe size must be increased to thenext size.Table 2. FHP Pumps come equipped with unions onboth the suction and discharge ports. Thisfeature simplifies installation and service, andit eliminates the possibility of leaks at threadedadapters.4. The FHP Pump must be connected to at least two(2) main drains (suction outlets) for each poolpump suction line. Each drain must be providedwith covers that are listed or certified to the latestpublished version of ANSI/ASME A112.19.8.The suction outlets of the main drains must be atleast 3 feet apart or at different planes. The suctionoutlets can be a drain and skimmer, two (2) drains, two (2) skimmers, or a skimmer with an equalizerline installed. For additional details and guidelines, refer to ANSI/APSP 7, the standard for SuctionEntrapment Avoidance in Swimming Pools,Wading Pools, Spas, Hot Tubs, and Catch Basins.Check the local codes for proper installationrequirements. Applicable local codes will takeprecedence over other codes.NOTE To prevent entrapment, the system must bebuilt so that it cannot operate with the pumpdrawing water from only one (1) main drain. Atleast two (2) main drains must be connectedto the pump when it is in operation. However,if two (2) main drains run into a single suctionline, the single suction line may be equippedwith a valve that will shut off both main drainsfrom the pump.5. The piping must be well supported and not forcedtogether in places where constant stress will beexperienced.6. Always use properly sized valves. Jandy DiverterValves and Jandy Ball Valves typically have thebest flow capabilities.7. Use the fewest fittings possible. Every additionalfitting has the effect of moving the equipmentfarther away from the water.NOTE If more than 10 suction fittings are needed, thepipe size must be increased.8. Every new installation must be pressure testedaccording to local codes. See Section 3.3, PressureTesting.3.2 Electrical Installation3.2.1 Voltage ChecksThe correct voltage, as specified on the pump dataplate, is necessary for proper performance and longmotor life. The incorrect voltage will decrease thepump’s ability to perform and can cause overheating, reduce the motor life, and result in higher electric bills. It is the responsibility of the electrical installerto provide data plate operating voltage to the pumpby ensuring proper circuit sizes and wire sizes for thespecific application.
