5SURFACE COOKING, CONT.TIPS TO PROTECTTHE GLASS-C ERAMICSURFACE• Before first use, clean the cooktop. (SeeCleaning, page 16.)• Do not use glass pans. They may scratchthe surface.• Do not allow plastic, sugar or foods withhigh sugar content to melt onto the hotcooktop. Should this happen, clean im-mediately. (See Cleaning, page 16.)• Never let a pan boil dry as this willdamage the surface and pan.• Never use cooktop as a work surface orcutting board. Never cook food directlyon the surface.• Never place a trivet or wok ring betweenthe surface and pan. These items canmark or etch the top.• Do not slide aluminum pans across a hotsurface. The pans may leave marks whichneed to be removed promptly. (SeeCleaning, page 16.)• Make sure the surface and the pan bot-tom are clean before turning on to pre-vent scratches.• To prevent scratching or damage to theglass-ceramic top, do not leave sugar, saltor fats on the cooking area. Wipe thecooktop surface with a clean cloth orpaper towel before using.• Never use a soiled dish cloth or spongeto clean the cooktop surface. A film willremain which may cause stains on thecooking surface after the area is heated.• Do not use a small pan on a large ele-ment. Not only does this waste energy,but it can also result in spillovers burningH OT SURFACEINDICATOR LIGHTSYour cooktop has Hot Surface Lights lo-cated next to the elements. These lightsindicate when the adjacent cooking area ishot to the touch even after the control hasbeen turned off. The red light will re-main on until the area has cooled.C OOKING AREASThe cooking areas on your cooktop areidentified by permanent patterns on theglass-ceramic surface. For most efficientcooking, fit the pan size to the element size.Pans should not extend more than 1/2 to1-inch beyond the cooking area.• Glass ceramic surfaces retain heat.Turn the elements off a few minutesbefore food is completely cookedand use the retained heat to com-plete the cooking.Because of the heat retention charac-teristics, the elements will not re-spond to changes in settings as quicklyas coil elements. In the event of apotential boilover, remove the panfrom the cooking area.NOTES:onto the cooking area which requiresextra cleaning• Do not use non-flat specialty items thatare oversized or uneven such as roundbottom woks, rippled bottom and/oroversized canners and griddles.• Do not slide heavy metal pans across thesurface since these may scratch.• Do not use foil or foil-type containers.Foil may melt onto the glass. If metalmelts on the cooktop, do not use. Call anauthorized Jenn-Air Servicer.• If a spillover occurs while cooking, imme-diately clean the spill from the cookingarea while it is hot to prevent a toughcleaning chore later. Using extreme care,wipe spill with a clean dry towel.• Do not allow spills to remain on thecooking area or the cooktop trim for along period of time.• Do not use abrasive cleansing powdersor scouring pads which will scratch thecooktop.• Do not use chlorine bleach, ammonia orother cleansers not specifically recom-mended for use on glass-ceramic.• To retain the appearance of the glass-ceramic cooktop, clean after each use.G LASS -CERAMIC SURFACE• On Canadian models, some or all of the surface will not operate during a self-cleancycle.• Cooktop may emit light smoke and odor the first few times the cooktop is used. Thisis normal.• When a control is turned on, a red glow can be seen through the glass-ceramic surface.The element will cycle on and off to maintain the preset heat setting.• Glass-ceramic cooktops retain heat for a period of time after the unit is turned off.When the HOT SURFACE light turns off (see below), the cooking area will be coolenough to touch.• NOTE: Do not attempt to lift the cooktop.NOTES:HOT SURFACELIGHTS ON COOKTOP
