22Maintenance Recommendations** Under No Circumstances should anyone enter thewater while a aerator is operating. **** Please keep the original box for maintenance ship-ping. **The following maintenance procedures can be uti-lized to ensure many years of quality performancefrom your Kasco aerator and reduce the need for morecostly repair work.PROPER INSTALLATION: Proper installation ofKasco equipment will include a power source withground fault interruption. For aerator models, theC-85 or C-95 (240/208V) included with the unit havebuilt-in ground fault interruption that is sufficient.Ground fault interrupters are a safety feature that canalso alert you to electrical leaks in the equipment. It isextremely important to test the GFI upon installation, each reinstallation, and monthly thereafter to ensureproper operation. If you have repeat, consistent tripson your ground fault, the equipment should be discon-nected and removed from the water. The power cordshould be inspected for damage and you should callKasco Marine at 715-262-4488 for further instructionsor email Kasco at sales@kascomarine.com.OBSERVATION: Operating equipment should beobserved on a regular basis (daily, if possible) for anyreduction or variation in performance. If a change inperformance is observed, the equipment should be dis-connected from power and inspected for any materialthat may have clogged the system or wrapped aroundthe shaft of the motor, especially plastic bags and fish-ing line. Even though Kasco Aerators are among themost clog-resistant on the market, it is impossible toprotect against all items that can clog equipment andstill maintain a flow of water. These materials can bevery damaging to the equipment under continued op-eration and must be removed as soon as possible. AL-WAYS UNPLUG THE UNIT BEFORE ATTEMPT-ING TO REMOVE CLOGS.WINTER STORAGE: In regions where there is sig-nificant freezing in the wintertime, the aerators shouldbe removed from the water to protect them from theexpansion pressure of the ice. In many areas, aeratorswill keep some amount of ice open through the winter. However, when the water is thrust into the air, it isexposed to the colder air temperatures longer and canactually make ice thicker on the pond/lake. Storageover winter is best in a location that is out of the sunand cool, but above 32OF. When storing units during theoffseason, it is important to store them upside down if theyare going to be sitting for long periods of time. Units thatsit upright on a shelf for many months, or even years have agreater likelihood of seals drying out. Storing upside downwill ensure oil is lubricating the seals and prevent drying.CLEANING: Aerators should be removed from thewater at least once per year (at the end of the seasonin cold climates) to clean the exterior of the system, especially the stainless steel motor housing (can). Themotor housing is the surface that dissipates heat intothe water and any algae, calcium, etc. build-up will be-come an insulator that blocks heat transfer. In warmerregions it is recommended that the motor is removedand cleaned at least two to three times per year de-pending on conditions. In most cases a power washerwill be sufficient if the unit and algae are still wet.SEAL AND OIL REPLACEMENT: This is a sealedmotor assembly and seals will wear out over time(similar to brake pads on a car). Replacement of theseals and a change of oil after three years may addlongevity to the operation of the motor, saving youthe cost of more expensive repairs. In warmer cli-mates where the aerator runs most or all of the year,it is a good idea to replace seals more regularly thanyou would need to in colder climates where the unit isremoved from the water for several months.ZINC ANODE: A Sacrificial Zinc Anode is suppliedon the shaft of all 8400JF, 3.1JF, and 5.1JF Modelaerators for protection of the equipment from corro-sion and electrolysis. The zinc anode should be up-dated (replaced) if reduced to half the original size orif white in color. Corrosion from electrolysis is morecommonly associated with saltwater or brackish water, but as a matter of precaution, it is important to periodi-cally check the zinc anode in all installations (at leastevery two to three months).Seal replacement and all other repair services shouldbe performed by Kasco Marine or a Kasco trainedAuthorized Repair Center. Any alterations or changesmade to Kasco units by an unauthorized source willvoid the warranty. This includes tampering with theunit, power cord, and/or control box.
