2 CONNECTING OPTIONAL DEVICESMOD (K)/Ver. 2.00 Confidential CONTENTS 232.7 Connect GPS35-HVS usingKCT-31This section describes how to connect theGPS35-HVS to the TK-7160/ TK-8160 by usingKCT-31. Required Items to Connect theGPS35-HVS• Transceiver• KCT-31• GPS35-HVSThe Garmin GPS35-HVS is a suitable GPS unit forinstalling in the TK-7160/ TK-8160. GPS35-HVS mustoutput RS232C data at CMOS logic level. A modifiedKCT-31 is used to convert the RS232C level to CMOSlevel.KCT-31 also must be modified to supply 12 V to theGPS35-HVS so that it can be connected to theTK-7160/TK-8160.Once the GPS unit is installed in the TK-7160/TK-8160, the GPS unit can be programmed to sendthe vehicle location to a TK-X80/ TK-X180 seriestransceiver that is used as a base unit interfaced to aPC running FleetSync, compatible AVL software.2.7.1 Programming GPS35-HVSThe GPS35-HVS must be configured using thesoftware supplied by Garmin. In addition, theGPS35-HVS must be powered with 12 V from anexternal source.Normally, the D-sub 9-pin connector on the PC side ismale, and the D-sub 9-pin connector on the modifiedKCT-31 side is female. A programming jig (Genderchanger) should be made in order to interface to theGPS35-HVS connector.2.7.2 Installing a D-sub 9-pinConnector (male) on theGPS35-HVS1. Strip and tin the red, black, blue and white wiresfrom the GPS35-HVS.2. Solder the blue wire to pin 2 of the D-sub 9-pinconnector (male).3. Solder the white wire to pin 3 of the D-sub 9-pinconnector (male).4. Solder the black wire to pin 5 of the D-sub 9-pinconnector (male).5. Solder the red wire to pin 9 of the D-sub 9-pinconnector (male).2.7.3 Preparing a Programming JigA specialized programming jig should be made inorder to program the GPS35-HVS. Prepare 2 D-sub 9-pin connectors (female) for the parts.1. Connect each pin 3 of the D-sub 9-pin connectors(female).2. Connect each pin 2 of the D-sub 9-pin connectors(female).3. Label and write “Garmin GPS-35HVS side only” onone of the 2 D-sub 9-pin connectors.4. Connect the black wire to pin 5 of the connectorlabeled “Garmin GPS-35HVS side only”.5. Connect the red wire to pin 9 of the connectorlabeled “Garmin GPS-35HVS side only”.6. Connect the black wire to a ground terminal on the12 V power supply.7. Connect the red wire to the + terminal on the 12 Vpower supply.THE TRANSCEIVER MUST BE TURNED OFF AND THEPOWER CABLE MUST BE REMOVED BEFOREINSTALLING THE GPS35-HVS IN THE TRANSCEIVER.AFTER MODIFYING THE KCT-31, LABEL ITAPPROPRIATELY TO AVOID CONNECTING THEMODIFIED KCT-31 TO A PC OR A LAPTOP COM PORT.
