LaCie Ethernet Disk miniUser ManualThe LaCie Ethernet Disk mini’s metal body is idealfor naturally dissipating internal drive heat. Its uniquedesign actually draws heat away from the internal drivetoward the external casing. The casing absorbs heat andwill take advantage of its large surface to further dis-sipate heat outside the casing. Because of this advanta-geous feature, heat is taken away from the internal drive, keeping it safe and prolonging its life and reliability. Asa consequence, it is normal that the external casing ishot to the touch. Please make sure that the vents of theback-bezel and front-bezel are not obstructed so thatthere is a natural airflow across the casing.1.1. Hard Drive Heat ManagementHeat Dissipation Design■Smart Fan Technology■USB 2.0USBThe casing alone is a great way to dissipate heat with-out the need of a fan. Therefore, currently, most drives donot require a fan. Only the largest capacity drives mayneed a fan. To find out if your drive includes a fan, pleaserefer to the item number and product datasheet. Some models of the Ethernet Disk mini have a ther-mo-regulated “smart fan”, which activates when the heatinside the casing reaches a certain temperature. Thesmart fan operates at two different speeds, and adjustsautomatically to changes in temperature.Upright, Stack & Rackmount Configuration■Heat dissipation is maximized when the drive is inthe upright position (Fig. 1.1.B.). If you have severalLaCie drives stacked on each other, please rememberto attach the included rubber feet on the under side ofyour drives. This will allow for some airflow betweenyour drives so that the heat dissipation can work effec-tively - especially if your LaCie drive does not includea fan. LaCie does not recommend stacking or rackingmore than 3 d2 drives on top of each other (Fig. 1.1.D.),especially if these drives are turned ON simultaneously.Fig ..AFig ..B Fig ..CFig ..DIntroductionpage
