45Before Coupling the Trailer to the Tow Vehicle• Be sure the size and rating of the fifth wheelhitch matches the pin box rating.• Be sure the fifth wheel hitch operates freely.• Lubricate the fifth wheel plate surface with alight coat of Lithium-base, waterproof grease.• Be sure the fifth wheel and pin box fasteners aretight and any welds are solid.WARNINGA loose fifth wheel can result in uncoupling,leading to death or serious injury.Make sure the fifth wheel and pin box aretight before coupling the trailer.• Be sure the break away lanyard and electricalconnection are clear of the coupling area.Adjust Hitch HeightIt is your responsibility to have the height of the pinbox or fifth wheel adjusted to match the height of thefifth wheel in your tow vehicle. Proper height adjust-ment is required to provide clearance between thebottom of the trailer and sides of the tow vehicle bed,to obtain level running of the trailer and to permitequal weight distribution on the axles. Your LanceTrailer dealer is able to perform the height adjustmentto match the trailer to your towing vehicle.Prepare the Fifth Wheel Coupler• Be sure the lock is open.• If the tow vehicle is equipped with a tailgate,lower it.• Block the trailer wheels, front and rear.Couple the Trailer to the Tow Vehicle• Back tow vehicle up close to the trailer, center-ing the pin box in the slot of the fifth wheel.• STOP before engaging the coupling.WARNINGNo one must be under the trailer or couplerduring the coupling.Death or serious injury can occur if the trailerdrops.• Adjust the height of the trailer, using the jack, sothat the fifth wheel plate just touches the pin boxplate.• Slowly back up the tow vehicle, keeping the pinbox centered in the slot of the fifth wheel. Con-tinue backing up until the fifth wheel locks firmlyon the pin box.• Visually check to confirm that the fifth wheellock is properly locked onto the pin box.• Attempt to pull forward as an initial test of theclosing of the fifth wheel lock.WARNINGAn improperly coupled fifth wheel can comeloose, resulting in death or serious injury.Raise the Drop-Leg JacksA trailer having a fifth wheel coupler will be outfit-ted with two drop leg jacks for raising and loweringthe trailer. Because we use several drop leg jackmechanisms, the general instructions below may varyslightly from the jack manufacturer’s instructions. Ifthe trailer jack on your trailer does not resemble thejack shown in the figures, follow the jack instructionsprovided by the jack manufacturer.• Slowly retract the jack and transfer the weightof the trailer on to the towing vehicle. Whenthe drop leg base is no longer resting on theground, the towing vehicle hitch is holding all ofthe weight of the trailer tongue. Continue retract-ing the jack to its fully retracted position.• Return the drop legs to their upper positions.The drop legs are held in the lowered positionwith a pin. Pulling it out will cause it to come outof the engagement with the drop leg and the legcan be relocated in the travel position and thepin re-installed.• Raise the tailgate.• Pick up the trailer wheel blocks.
