2-1SVP Server Installation, Setup, & Maintenance Manual - Revision 12SVP Server OverviewThis chapter describes the SVP Server capacity and details the SVPServer front panel.Chapter Topics • Quality of Service• Multiple SVP Servers• The Timing Function• SVP Server Capacity• SVP Server Front PanelQuality of ServiceSVP Server is a Quality of Service (QoS) mechanism that is anEthernet LAN device that works with the access point (AP) to provideQoS on the wireless LAN. It is implemented in the Wireless Telephoneand AP to enhance voice quality over the wireless network. All voice packets to and from the UNIVERGE WL Mobile Handsets areintercepted by the SVP Server and encapsulated for prioritization asthey are routed to and from an IP telephony server or gateway.Preference is given to voice packets over data packets on thewireless medium, increasing the probability that all voice packets aretransmitted efficiently and with minimum delay. SVP Server isfully compliant with the IEEE 802.11 and 802.11b standards.SVP Server is required for QoS because the current IEEE 802.11bwireless LAN standard provides no mechanism for differentiating audiopackets from data packets. This standard is undergoing revision toversion 802.11e to provide all the functionality of SVP Server in anindustry standard thus ensuring high-quality voice in a mixed clientenvironment. Once 802.11e is ratified, NEC Business Solutions Ltd.and its 802.11 technology partners will adopt the new specification. When the 802.11e specification replaces SVP Server, the WirelessTelephones can be upgraded and the SVP Server can be removed fromthe system.
