ENW415-1468 / A / 09.30.16288.1 ASH REMOVAL PROCEDURES! WARNINGIMPROPER DISPOSAL OF ASHES RESULT IN FIRES. DO NOT DISCARD ASHES IN CARDBOARDBOXES, DUMP IN BACKYARDS, OR STORE IN GARAGES.IF USING A VACUUM TO CLEAN UP ASHES, BE SURE THE ASHES ARE ENTIRE COOLED. USING AVACUUM TO CLEAN UP WARM ASHES COULD CAUSE A FIRE INSIDE THE VACUUM.NEVER OPERATE YOUR APPLIANCE WITH THE ASH PLUG (IF APPLICABLE) REMOVED.Since these models have no ash pan, shovel some ashes out through the door into a metal containerwith a tight fitting lid. Keep the closed container on a noncombustible floor or ground, well away from allcombustible materials. The ashes should be retained in the closed container until all cinders have thoroughlycooled. Cold wood ashes can be used on the garden or in the compost.84.1AWhen wood is burned slowly, it produces tar and other organic vapors, which combine with expelled moistureto form creosote. The creosote vapors condense in the relatively cooler chimney flue of a slow-burning fire. Asa result, creosote residue accumulates on the flue lining. When ignited this creosote makes an extremely hotfire. The chimney connector and chimney should be inspected at least once every two months during the heatingseason to determine if a creosote buildup has occurred. If creosote has accumulated it should be removed to reduce the risk of a chimney fire.8.1.1 APPLIANCES WITH ASH PAN (1100, 1150, 1400, 1900)8.1.2 APPLIANCES WITHOUT ASH PAN (1450)NOTE: Optional ash pans are not equipped with a cover or rearfolding handle.Whenever the ashes in your firebox accumulate to a depth of 3 or 4inches (76-102mm); they tend to burn themselves up. When the fire hasburned down and cooled, remove any excess ashes but leave an ash bedapproximately 1 inch (25mm) deep on the firebox bottom to help maintaina hot charcoal bed.To use your ash pan, pull the ash dump handle forward, rotateapproximately 90° counterclockwise to the open position. Rake the excessashes into the ash pan. Close the ash well making sure that no coals or foreign objects are preventing the ashplug or well door from closing. To ensure that the ash well is fully closed, allow the door to snap shut. This creates a fire hazard that may result in a house/chimney fire, internal damage to the appliance ordiscoloration to the gold plated door (plated finishes are not covered by the warranty).NOTE: ALWAYS ENSURE THE ASH PAN IS COMPLETELY COOL PRIOR TO REMOVING IT FROM THEASH DRAWER.Remove the ash pan by lifting it up and to the left or right side of the ash drawer. Temporarily place the ash panon a non-combustible surface and close the ash pan lid. Remove the ash pan and safely dispose of the ashes. Before reinstalling the ash pan ensure that the ash pan lid is OPEN. Place the ash pan into the pedestal.NEVER OPERATE YOUR APPLIANCE WITH THE ASH WELL IN AN OPEN OR AJAR POSITION.ASH PANLIDASH PAN8.2 CREOSOTE FORMATION AND REMOVAL
