75Focusing on the SubjectShooting FeaturesUsing Face DetectionIn the following shooting modes, the camera uses facedetection to automatically focus on human faces. If thecamera detects more than one face, a double border isdisplayed around the face that the camera will focuson, and single borders are displayed around the otherfaces.• When using Face priority, if you press the shutter-release button halfway while no faces aredetected or while framing a shot with no faces in it, the camera automatically selects the focusareas (up to nine) that contain the subject closest to the camera.• When x (Scene auto selector) , is selected, the focus area changes depending on which scene thecamera selects.• If no faces are detected when the shutter-release button is pressed halfway in Portrait or Nightportrait scene mode, or smart portrait mode, the camera will focus on the subject at the center ofthe frame.B Notes on Face Detection• The camera’s ability to detect faces depends on a variety of factors, including whether or not thesubject is facing the camera. Additionally, the camera may be unable to detect faces in thefollowing situations:- When faces are partially hidden by sunglasses or otherwise obstructed- When faces take up too much or too little of the frame• When the frame includes more than one face, the faces detected by the camera and the face onwhich the camera focuses depend upon a variety of factors, including the direction in which thesubject is facing.• In some rare cases, such as those described in “Autofocus” (A29), the subject may not be in focuseven though the double border turns green. If the camera does not focus, try “Focus Lock” (A76).C Viewing Pictures Taken Using Face Detection• During playback, the camera automatically rotates images according to the orientation of thefaces that were detected at the time of shooting (except for pictures taken using continuousshooting mode (A53)).• When zooming in on an image displayed in full-frame playback mode by rotating the zoomcontrol toward g (i), the image is enlarged at the center of the face that was detected duringshooting (A31 ) (except for pictures taken using continuous shooting mode (A53)).Shooting mode Number of faces thatcan be detected Focus area (double border)Face priority is selected for AFarea mode (A37) in A (auto)mode or continuous shootingmode Up to 12 The face closest to the camerax (Scene auto selector),Portrait, Night portrait scenemode (A38)F Smart portrait mode (A50) Up to 3 The face closest to the center ofthe frame11401140114029m 0s29m 0s29m 0s
