118Connecting to a ComputerConnecting to Televisions, Computers and PrintersCharging While Connecting to a ComputerWhen the Charge by computer option (A 139) in the camera’s setup menu isset to Auto (default setting), if the camera is connected to a computer using theUSB cable, the battery inserted into the camera can be automatically chargeddepending on the ability of the computer to supply power.See “Before Connecting the Camera” (A 113) and “Transferring Images from aCamera to a Computer” (A 114) for more information on connecting the camerato a computer.Charge LampThe following chart explains charge lamp status when the camera is connected toa computer.B Notes on Charging with Connection to a Computer• The battery cannot be charged, nor can data be transferred, when the camera is connected to acomputer before the camera’s display language and date and time have been set (A 18). If thecamera’s clock battery (A 129) has been exhausted, the date and time must be reset before the batterycan be charged or images can be transferred with connection to a computer. In this case, use theCharging AC Adapter EH-69P (A 14) to charge the battery and then set the camera’s date and time.• If the camera is turned off, charging will also stop.• If a computer enters sleep mode while charging, charging will stop and the camera may be turned off.• When disconnecting the camera from a computer, turn the camera off and then disconnect the USB cable.• It may take longer to charge the battery with connection to a computer than with charging usingthe Charging AC Adapter EH-69P. Charging time increases when images are transferred while thebattery is charging.• When the camera is connected to a computer, an application installed on the computer, such asNikon Transfer 2, may start. If the camera was connected to the computer for the sole purpose ofcharging the battery, exit the application.• The camera turns off automatically if there is no communication with the computer for 30 minutesafter the battery has finished charging.• Depending upon computer specifications, settings, and power supply and allocation, it may beimpossible to charge the battery inserted into the camera via computer connection.Charge lamp DescriptionBlinks slowly(green) Battery charging.Off Battery not charging. If the charge lamp changes from slow blinking(green) to off while the power-on lamp is lit, charging is complete.Flickers (green)• The ambient temperature is not suited to charging. Charge the batteryindoors with an ambient temperature of 5°C to 35°C (41°F to 95°F).• A USB cable is not correctly connected or the battery is faulty.Reconnect the USB cable correctly or replace the battery.• Computer is in sleep mode and does not supply power. Reboot a computer.• The battery cannot be charged as computer’s specifications orsettings does not support power supply to the camera.
