Short messagesThe Short Message application is activated bypressing the SMS application button on the com-municator interface keyboard.Short message sending and receiving requiresthat the Short Message Service (SMS) is support-ed by the network you are using and activatedfor your SIM card. Contact your home serviceprovider for details.The Short Message Service enables you to sendand receive short alphanumeric text messages ofup to 160 characters over the digital cellular net-work. The advantages of the short messages are:sending is practically instantaneous, messagescan be sent or received even during a voice ordata call and messages can be read in any cellu-lar phone that has the capability. The SMS Serv-ice centre will take care of delivering themessage even if the receiving phone is off at thetime of sending.Before you can send short messages, you muststore the SMS Service centre number in the SMSapplication’s settings.The SMS main view shows four folders and theDocument outbox. The Own texts folder containstexts that you have written, Received messagescontains short messages you have received,Standard messages contains predefined messagetemplates (see "Standard messages") and Busi-ness cards contains all contact cards in the Con-tacts directory (see "Business cards"). Documentoutbox is described in chapter 12 "Documentoutbox".Note: You can only send short messages tophone numbers stored in the Tel (GSM) fields ofcontact cards. (This also applies to the Nokia9000 Communicator PCN model.)Sending messagesShort messages can be created and sent in theSMS, Notes (see chapter 8 "Notes: Sending") andCalendar applications (see chapter 9 "Calendar:Day view - Memos").To create a new short message: Press Write message in the SMS main view toopen the short message editor.A short message in the editor resembles apostcard. A character counter appears at thetop of the editor. The counter shows howmany characters have been typed and howmany are still available, see figure 6-1. In re-ceived messages, the stamp on the right halfof the message is postmarked. When the message is ready to be sent, contin-ue by pressing Recipient. The Short messagedirectory opens, see "SMS directory".To send a previously created document: Select the Own texts, Standard messages orBusiness cards folder and press Open. Select a document and press Open.
