Chapter 9 Nortel VPN Router 5000 option installation 157Nortel VPN Router Installation — Hardware OptionsSupport for 16 I/O portsThe VPN Router 5000 supports a maximum of 16 I/O ports. This number includesthe two built-in LAN ports on the gateway. When you provision a VPN Router5000 with I/O cards, do not exceed the 16-port maximum. For example, thefollowing configuration results in 18 I/O ports:• two built-in LAN ports (two ports)• four quad T1/E1 CSU/DSU WAN interface cards (16 ports)Installing or replacing an option cardTo install or replace an interface card or a hardware encryption accelerator card:1 Shut down the VPN Router 5000 using the Web GUI or the CLI, and thenunplug the router as described in “Shutting down the system to add or replacehardware” on page 146.2 Remove the front bezel from the chassis, and then remove the chassis fromthe equipment rack (see “Removing the front bezel and top cover” onpage 147).3 Remove the top cover from the chassis (see “Removing the front bezel andtop cover” on page 147).4 Attach the antistatic wrist strap that was shipped with the VPN Router 5000(see “Attaching the antistatic wrist strap” on page 151).5 Locate the slot where you plan to install the new or replacement option card(Table 14 on page 153 for guidelines).6 Remove the filler panel screw and pull out the filler panel (or the option cardthat you are replacing) from the slot (Figure 59 on page 158).7 Lower the new option card into the slot connector, and gently press the optioncard into the connector.Ensure that you firmly seat the card in the slot. If you do not properly seat thecard, it does not work.Danger: Turn off the VPN Router 5000 and unplug it before youattempt to install an option card.
