METERING THE AMOUNT OF LIGHTLight MeteringLight metering can measure the brightness of theframed picture in various ways. The IS-3DLXemploys three metering systems: (1) ESP lightmetering , (2) center-weighted average lightmetering, and (3) spot metering. The IS-3DLXallows you to select the light metering system mostsuitable in any photographic situation. At the same time, the IS-3DLX uses TTL (through-the-lens) light metering to automatically measurethe light that enters the lens. This allows you toobtain very accurate light metering that is notaffected by changes in the distance between thesubject and the camera.Fuzzy Logic ESP (Electro-Selective Pattern) LightMetering (Exposure Mode P)ESP light metering measures the brightness of thecentral portion and peripheral portion of the frameseparately in order to determine the properexposure. The calculation program used is basedon programmed data to properly compensate forbacklighting. ESP light metering is usedautomatically when in the P (Program) mode.Center-Weighted Average Light Metering(Exposure Mode A or M)Center-weighted average light metering is the mostwidely used light metering system (Fig. A). Thissystem measures the light available throughout theframe with special emphasis on the center of theframe. When in A (Aperture-preferred), S (Shutter -preferred) or M (Manual) mode, this light meteringsystem is automaticallyactivated. When thecontrast between brightand dark areas is not tooextreme outside the centerof the frame, this systemoffers excellent results.Spot MeteringSpot metering (Fig. B) measures the brightness atthe center of the frame only. Because this meteringsystem calculates the correct exposure for only onepoint, it is convenient when the subject is backlit orthe picture contains strong contrasts. Whenshooting a subject in front of an extremely brightbackground, you should use spot-metering on thesubject's face. To properly expose white objects, use spot metering and then press the + side of theexposure compensation button. To properly exposeblack objects, use spot metering and then press the- side of the exposure compensation button.Spot metering can beused in any of the P, A, Sor M exposure modes.74
