Page 9 Introduction to Your Palm™ m100 HandheldPalm Desktop organizer softwarePalm Desktop software extends many of the functions of yourhandheld to your computer and serves to back up your data. Viewingand editing your data using Palm Desktop software is optional.However, when you use it with your handheld and the built-inHotSync technology, you can fully synchronize the information onyour handheld with the information on your computer.It is a good idea to back up your data in case something happens to thedata on your handheld. Changes you make on your handheld or PalmDesktop software appear in both places after you synchronize.With Palm Desktop software, you can dothe following:n Work with your handheld applications on your computer. PalmDesktop software duplicates the Date Book, Address Book, To DoList, Note Pad, and Memo Pad applications on your handheld, soyou can view, enter, and modify any data stored on yourhandheld. (You cannot modify Note Pad data in Palm Desktopsoftware.)n Back up the data stored on your handheld with HotSynctechnology and synchronize the data on your Palm Desktopsoftware. Synchronization is a one-step procedure that ensuresyour data is always safe and up-to-date. See “Exchanging andupdating data: HotSync operations” in Chapter 4 for moreinformation.n Import and export data so you can easily transfer data from otherdesktop applications into Date Book, Address Book, To Do List,and Memo Pad. See “Importing data” in Chapter 2 for moreinformation.n Print your Date Book, Address Book, To Do List, and Memo Padinformation on any printer.Connecting the HotSync cableThe HotSync cable that comes with your handheld enables you tosynchronize the information on your handheld with the Palm Desktopsoftware using HotSync technology.Important: If you are upgrading from another Palm OS handheld,follow the instructions in Appendix C, “UpgradeInformation” before completing these steps.
