4 – Managing SwitchesConfiguring a Switch59235-02 A 4-17L4.6.2.1Domain ID and Domain ID LockThe domain ID is a unique Fibre Channel identifier for the switch. The FibreChannel address consists of the domain ID, port ID, and the Arbitrated LoopPhysical Address (ALPA). The maximum number of switches within a fabric is 239with each switch having a unique domain ID.Switches come from the factory with the domain IDs unlocked. This means that ifthere is a domain ID conflict in the fabric, the switch with the highest principalpriority, or the principal switch, will reassign any domain ID conflicts and establishthe fabric. If you lock the domain ID on a switch and a domain ID conflict occurs, one of the switches will isolate as a separate fabric and the Logged-In LEDs onboth switches will flash to show the affected ports. Refer to the SANbox 5000Series Fibre Channel Switch Command Line Interface Guide for information aboutthe Switch keyword and the Domain ID Lock and Principal Priority parameters. If you connect a new switch to an existing fabric with its domain ID unlocked, anda domain conflict occurs, the new switch will isolate as a separate fabric. However, you can remedy this by resetting the new switch or taking it offline thenback online. The principal switch will reassign the domain ID and the switch willjoin the fabric.4.6.2.2SyslogThe Syslog (Remote Logging) feature enables saving of the log information to aremote host that supports the syslog protocol. When enabled, the log entries aresent to the syslog host at the IP address that you specify in the Logging Host IPAddress field. Log entries are saved in the internal switch log whether this featureis enabled or not.To save log information to a remote host, you must edit the syslog.conf file(located on the remote host) and then restart the syslog daemon. Consult youroperating system documentation for information on how to configure RemoteLogging. The syslog.conf file on the remote host must contain an entry thatspecifies the name of the log file in which to save error messages. Add thefollowing line to the syslog.conf file. A separates the selector field(local0.info) and action field which contains the log file path name(/var/adm/messages/messages.name).local0.info /var/adm/messages.nameNote: Domain ID reassignment is not reflected in zoning that is defined bydomain ID and port number pair. You must reconfigure zones that areaffected by domain ID reassignment.
