51031-00 A A-1A Hardware and SoftwareCisco Unified Fabric SwitchThe Cisco Nexus 5000 Series switch enables a high-performance,standards-based, Ethernet unified fabric. The platform consolidates separateLAN, SAN, and server cluster environments into a single physical fabric whilepreserving existing operational models. The Cisco Nexus 5000 Series switchprovides an enhanced Ethernet topology by leveraging data center bridgingfeatures, which include priority flow control (PFC) for a lossless fabric andenhanced transmission selection (ETS) for bandwidth management. TheseEthernet enhancements allow technologies like Fibre Channel over Ethernet, andallow consolidation of I/O without compromise. A unified fabric enables increasedbandwidth usage, less cabling, fewer adapters, and less network equipment. Thebenefits are: reduced power and cooling requirements, significant cost savings ininfrastructure software and hardware, and reduced infrastructure managementcosts. The Nexus 5000 Series switch uses cut-through architecture, supports line-rate10 Gigabit Ethernet on all ports, and maintains consistently low latency(independent of packet size and enabled services). In addition, the Nexus 5000Series switch supports a set of network technologies known collectively as IEEEdata center bridging (DCB) that increases the reliability, efficiency, and scalabilityof Ethernet networks. These features enable support for multiple traffic classesover a lossless Ethernet fabric, thus enabling consolidation of LAN, SAN, andcluster environments. The ability to connect FCoE to native Fibre Channelprotects existing storage system investments, while dramatically simplifyingin-rack cabling. For more information about the Cisco Nexus 5000 Series switch, visithttp://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps9670/index.html.For assistance using the JDSU tool, contact technical support at 1-866-594-2557.
