Commonwealth of MassachusettsInstallation RequirementsNOTICE!In the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, theinstallation must be performed by a licensed plumberor gas fitter.1. For all side wall horizontally vented gas fueled equipmentinstalled in every dwelling, building or structure used in wholeor in part for residential purposes, including those ownedor operated by the commonwealth and where the side wallexhaust vent termination is less than seven (7) feet abovefinished grade, in the area of the venting, including but notlimited to decks and porches, the following requirements shallbe satisfied:d. INSTALLATION OF CARBON MONOXIDEDETECTORS. At the time of installation of the side wallhorizontal vented gas fueled equipment, the installingplumber or gasfitter shall observe that a hard wiredcarbon monoxide detector with an alarm and batteryback-up is installed on the floor level where the gasequipment is to be installed. In addition, the installingplumber or gas fitter shall observe that a battery operatedor hard wired carbon monoxide detector with an alarm isinstalled on each additional level of the dwelling, buildingor structure served by the side wall horizontal ventedgas fueled equipment. It shall be the responsibility ofthe property owner to secure the services of qualifiedlicensed professionals for the installation of hard wiredcarbon monoxide detectors.i. In the event that the side wall horizontally vented gasfueled equipment is installed in a crawl space or anattic, the hard wired carbon monoxide detector withalarm and battery back-up may be installed on the nextadjacent floor level.ii. In the event that the requirements of this subdivisioncan not be met at the time of completion of installation,the owner shall have a period of thirty (30) daysto comply with the above requirements; provided,however, that during said thirty (30) day period, abattery operated carbon monoxide detector with analarm shall be installed.e. APPROVED CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTORS.Each carbon monoxide detector as required in accordancewith the above provisions shall comply with NFPA 720and be ANSI/UL 2034 listed and IAS certified.f. SIGNAGE. A metal or plastic identification plate shall bepermanently mounted to the exterior of the building at aminimum height of eight (8) feet above grade directly in linewith the exhaust vent terminal for the horizontally ventedgas fueled heating appliance or equipment. The sign shallread, in print size no less than one-half (1/2) inch in size,“GAS VENT DIRECTLY BELOW. KEEP CLEAR OF ALLOBSTRUCTIONS”.g. INSPECTION. The state or local gas inspector of the sidewall horizontally vented gas fueled equipment shall notapprove the installation unless, upon inspection, theinspector observes carbon monoxide detectors and signageinstalled in accordance with the provisions of 248 CMR5.08(2)(a)1 through 4.Improper venting can result in excessive levels ofcarbon monoxide which can cause severe personalinjury or death!2. Exemptions — The following equipment is exempt from248 CMR 5.08(2)(a) 1 through 4:a. The equipment listed in Chapter 10 entitled “EquipmentNot Required To Be Vented” in the most current editionof NFPA 54 as adopted by the Board; andb. Product Approved side wall horizontally vented gas fueledequipment installed in a room or structure separate fromthe dwelling, building or structure used in whole or inpart for residential purposes.3. MANUFACTURER REQUIREMENTS — GASEQUIPMENT VENTING SYSTEM PROVIDED.a When the manufacturer of Product Approved side wallhorizontally vented gas equipment provides a ventingsystem design or venting system components with theequipment, the instructions provided by the manufacturerfor installation of the equipment and the venting systemshall include:i. Detailed instructions for the installation of the ventingsystem design or the venting system components; andii. A complete parts list for the venting system designor venting system.4. MANUFACTURER REQUIREMENTS — GASEQUIPMENT VENTING SYSTEM NOT PROVIDED.a When the manufacturer of a Product Approved side wallhorizontally vented gas fueled equipment does not providethe parts for venting the flue gases, but identifies “specialventing systems”, the following requirements shall besatisfied by the manufacturer:i. The referenced “special venting system” instructionsshall be included with the appliance or equipmentinstallation instructions; andii. The “special venting systems” shall be ProductApproved by the Board, and the instructions for thatsystem shall include a parts list and detailed installationinstructions.5. A copy of all installation instructions for all Product Approvedside wall horizontally vented gas fueled equipment, all ventinginstructions, all parts lists for venting instructions, and/or allventing design instructions shall remain with the applianceor equipment at the completion of the installation.Improper venting can result in excessive levels ofcarbon monoxide which can cause severe personalinjury or death!MACODE-3
