8 Chapter 1Connections & SetupThings to Consider Before You ConnectProtect Against Power Surges• Connect all components before you plug any of their power cords into the wall outlet.• Turn off the TV/DVD and/or component before you connect or disconnect any cables.• Make sure all antennas and cables are properly grounded. Refer to the Important Safeguards sheet packedwith your TV/DVD.Protect Components from Overheating• Don’t block ventilation holes on any of the components. Arrange the components so that air can circulatefreely.• Don’t stack components.• When you place components in a stand, make sure you allow adequate ventilation.• If you connect an audio receiver or amplifier, place it on the top shelf so the heated air from it won’t flowaround other components.Position Cables Properly to Avoid Audio Interference• Insert each cable firmly into the designated jack.• If you place components above the TV/DVD, route all cables down the side of the back of the TV/DVDinstead of straight down the middle of the back of the TV/DVD.• If your antenna uses 300-ohm twin lead cables, do not coil the cables. Also, keep the twin lead cablesaway from audio/video cables.Important Stand and Base Safety InformationChoose the location for your TV/DVD carefully. Place the TV/DVD on a stand or base that is of adequate sizeand strength to prevent the TV/DVD from being accidentally tipped over, pushed off, or pulled off. Thiscould cause personal injury and/or damage the TV/DVD. Refer to the Important Safeguards sheet packed withyour TV/DVD.Use Indirect LightDon’t place the TV/DVD where sunlight or room lighting will be directed toward the screen. Use soft orindirect lighting.Connection PicturesAudio/video cables are usually bundled together. For better visibility, the connection pictures in this bookshow each cable separately (audio left, audio right, and video).Types of Discs Your TV/DVD will Play• DVD discs - DVD discs contain high quality picture and sound content.• Audio discs - Audio CDs contain musical or sound content only.• Video CD discs – Like DVD video discs, Video CDs contain picture and sound content. The difference isthe amount of information that can be stored on the disc.• MP3 discs – A disc that contains audio files (for example, a CD-R with downloaded MP3 files).
