CHAPTER 5: LOCAL CONSOLE PORT ACCESS 4747Chapter 5: Local Console Port AccessLocal Port FunctionalityWhen you are located at the server rack, Dominion KX provides standard KVM switch functionality via itsLocal Console Ports, which features an On-Screen Display (OSD) for quick, convenient switching betweenservers. The Dominion KX Local Console Port provides a direct analog connection to your connectedservers; the performance is exactly as if you were directly connected to the server’s keyboard, mouse, andvideo ports.Physical ConnectionsLocal Console Ports can be found on the rear panel of the Dominion KX.Figure 44 Local User Panel on Dominion KXMonitor: Attach a standard multisync VGA monitor to the HD15 (F) video port.Keyboard: Attach either a standard PS/2 keyboard to the Mini-DIN6 (F) keyboard port or a standard USBmouse to one of the USB Type A (F) ports.Mouse: Attach either a standard PS/2 mouse to the Mini-DIN6 (F) mouse port or a standard USB mouse toone of the USB Type A (F) ports.Note: USB keyboard and mouse ports are to be used only for keyboard and mouse access – other USBdevices such as external drives, scanners, etc. should not be connected to these ports.Simultaneous UsersThe Dominion KX Local Console Port provides an independent access path to your connected servers.Using the Local Console Port does not prevent users from simultaneously connecting over the network, andeven when users have connected to Dominion KX over the network, you may still simultaneously accessyour servers from the rack via the Local Console Port.Security and AuthenticationTo use the Dominion KX Local Console Port, first authenticate with a valid username and password.Dominion KX provides a fully-integrated authentication and security scheme, whether you accessDominion KX via the network or via the Local Console Port. In both cases, users use the same usernameand password, and Dominion KX allows access only to those servers to which a user has accesspermissions (see Chapter 4 for more information on creating server access and security settings). If your Dominion KX has been configured for external authentication services (LDAP, Active Directory,RADIUS, Raritan’s CommandCenter management appliance), authentication attempts at the Local ConsolePort also are authenticated against the external authentication service.
