Serial Communications Page 7-2_________________________________________________________________Command Mode If a protocol is enabled, the 2010Dserial port automatically switches tocommand mode any time a start ofcommand character is received (an "@",for the ML protocol). The port remainsin command mode until terminal mode isselected or the system is reset.PrerequisitesIn order to communicate with the Model 2010D remotely, the following equipment will be needed: A computer with at least one serial RS-232 port capable ofrunning terminal emulation software. For a remote telephoneconnection, an internal or external Hayes compatible modemwill also be necessary. For terminal mode communications, a terminal emulation programcapable of emulating ANSI terminals, such as Hyperterminal. If the unit is to be accessed via telephone lines, two modemswill be necessary: one for the computer and one for the Model2010D. A Hayes compatible external modem is recommended forthe Model 2010D. The baud rate should be at least 2400,however 9600 baud or greater is highly recommended. The modemmust be capable of retaining setup information, either bysaving to non-volatile memory or by setting DIP switches. An RS-232 cable will be needed to connect the Model 2010D tothe computer or modem. The type of cable used will depend onwhether a computer or modem is to be attached. Since theModel 2010D's COM1 and COM2 connectors adhere to the 9 pinstandards established for personal computers, both types ofcables are readily available. Tables 4-6 and 4-7 list wiringconnections for these cables. For direct computer connection, a null modem cable will beneeded. The Model 2010D end of the cable must have a 9 pinfemale connector. The computer end should be either a 9 pinor 25 pin female connector, depending on the computer'sconnector type. An ordinary 9 pin female to 25 pin male modemserial cable will be needed for a modem connection.
