35 Basic settingsAssistant MenuThe purpose of the Setup Assistant is to help youset up your surround system correctly. If you follow thesteps described below, the K6 will automatically calibrateyour loudspeakers with the help of the measurementmicrophone supplied, and under normal listening roomconditions this procedure will deliver optimum resultsfrom your system. If the automatic calibration system is to work properly thefollowing conditions must be satisfied: the measurementmicrophone must be set up with free space all round it,close to your preferred listening position (e.g. on theliving room table, or on the arm of an armchair). Theremust be straight-line visual contact between the micro-phone and each loudspeaker.First connect the supplied microphone to the headphonesocket on the right-hand side of the K6, below the frontpanel. Set a normal listening volume.Call up the Setup Assistant and the menu shown belowappears.Main speaker:Center speaker:Rear speaker:Subwoofer:Satellite high pass:The first step is to enter the size of your loudspeakers inthe right-hand column of the menu (see 'LoudspeakerMenu'), and state whether your system includes a sub-woofer or not.Auto-setup:Now move to the 'Auto-setup' menu point and press the button to activate the menu point. To ensure that the calibration process can be carried outcorrectly it is essential to set the volume to the optimumlevel beforehand. To help set the correct level the K6generates a hissing signal on the front left channel. Inthe 'Volume' line on the screen you will see the currentlyset volume, following by a flashing indicator informingyou which button to press. 'VOL+' means that the volumeis too low. 'VOL-' means that it is too high. The calibra-tion process is initiated by pressing the button, but this will not work until you see 'OK' on the screen. The K6 will now carry out the automatic calibration proc-ess. During this period you will hear various test signalsfrom your loudspeakers. The results could be falsified ifany loud noises occur during the duration of the calibra-tion process, so take care to keep the room quiet. The on-screen 'Auto-setup' display on your TV setkeeps you constantly informed about the settings it hasestablished. In the Level column you will see the setcorrections (volume compensation), while the Dist.column lists the measured loudspeaker distances. In some export versions the distance is indicated in feet(1 ft=0,3 m).Typical display of measured valuesproduced by the Auto-setup menuNotesIf the calibration process was spoiled by extraneoussounds, or if implausible results are generated for what-ever reason, you can re-start the calibration process atany time. The distances established by the Assistant are calcu-lated on the basis of acoustic reflection times. They mayvary slightly from the true geometric distances due tosignal delays in your loudspeakers. If the automatic calibration process supplies invalid re-sults due to difficult acoustic conditions in your listeningroom, we recommend that you should first try varying themicrophone position and / or the volume setting in anattempt to obtain a valid result. If this does not bring about an improvement, makingautomatic calibration impossible, you can still carry outthe loudspeaker set-up procedure manually via the'Loudspeaker Menu'.
