TerminologyWhat is Scanning?Unlike standard AM or FM radio stations, most two-waycommunications do not transmit continuously. TheUBC 245XLT scans the channels you program until itfinds an active frequency.Scanning stops on an active frequency and remains onthat channel as long as the transmission continues. When the transmission ends, the scanning cycleresumes until another transmission is received. What is Searching? The UBC 245XLT can search each of its 10 bands tofind active frequencies. This is different from scanningbecause you are searching for frequencies that have notbeen programmed into your scanner. You can choosebetween two speeds while searching. Turbo Search, anew feature for Uniden scanners, can search the VHF FMbands at up to 300 channels per second. What is Trunk Tracking?Conventional scanning is a simple concept. You enter aradio frequency in your scanner’s memory which is usedby someone you want to monitor. So when your scannerstops on a frequency, you usually know who it is, andmore importantly, you can stop on a channel and listento an entire conversation. This type of scanning is easyand fun.As the demand for public communications hasincreased, many public radio users don’t have enoughfrequencies to meet their needs, and this has created aserious problem. Trunking radio systems solve thisproblem.5
